Chapter 755 The Price of Belief
Yunice hadnโt noticed Wyattโs return. The moment he reappeared, he caught sight of his wife chatting animatedly with a man he didnโt recognizeโa man who looked cultured, refined, and far too comfortable talking with her.
Mr. Wyattโs internal alarms blared to life, every nerve on high alert. He moved in silently, looming behind Sauron like a dark guardian, his presence oppressive, eyes sharp as blades.
Sauron was mid-thought, his tone brimming with enthusiasm. โโฆThat tension between lifeโs fragility and artโs eternity was captured so vividly in your designโโ
โFragile things donโt usually hold up well,โ Wyatt cut in abruptly, his voice stiff. Snatching a glass of juice from a passing waiter, he shoved it into Yuniceโs hand. โMs. Saunders, have something to soothe your throat.โ
His gaze flicked to Sauron, cold and deliberate.
Yunice: โโฆโ
She took the glass, shooting Wyatt a warning glare.
Sauron hesitated, then gave a genial smile, picking up his thread. โEspecially that light installation in the third sectionโโ
โThat was my idea,โ Wyatt interjected again, lips curving in a humorless smile as he met Sauronโs gaze. โDo you want to discuss it with me?โ
Yunice kicked him under the table.
This time, Sauron clearly felt the weight of Wyattโs sour hostility. He paused, pushed up his glasses, and glanced between Yuniceโs embarrassed expression and Wyattโs blatantly possessive stance. Realization dawned.
He chuckled, retreating gracefully. โIt seems Mr. Wyatt has some family matters to discuss with Ms. Saunders. I wonโt intrude. Ms. Saunders, I look forward to continuing this conversation another time.โ He nodded politely to Yunice, then tossed Wyatt a knowing look that said, "I get it," before slipping away with a stifled laugh.
Wyatt grunted, somewhat appeased by the manโs tact.
Once Sauron was gone, Yunice exhaled sharply and pinched Wyattโs arm. โWyatt! Canโt you behave with a little more composure?โ
He gave her a look of mock offense. โIโm not composed?โ If he hadnโt been, he wouldโve done far worse than glare.
Just then, a loud pop! echoed through the hall. Confetti cannons fired, showering the room in glittering streamers.
Among the cascade, a cardboard shell hurtled toward Yunice. She had barely registered surprise when Wyatt seized her arm and, in the next second, spun into a swift kick. The object went flying across the room.
Through the rain of ribbons, Yuniceโs gaze lingered on his tall frame, a sudden flutter stirring in her chest. After all these yearsโฆ still breathtaking.
The moment passed, and the host called everyone over to cut Mindyโs cake. Yunice started forward, but her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screenโher hospital was calling.
She answered, and the urgent voice of the surgical director came through. โDirector, a highly complex case just came in. None of us are completely confident. Can you come? I know itโs your daughterโs birthday, but this is criticalโlife or death.โ His voice was taut with apology, yet mostly with urgency.
This wasnโt the first time Yunice had faced such a choice. She decided instantly, turning toward Wyatt. โI have to go to the hospital. They need me for surgery.โ Her eyes flicked toward Mindy, her voice soft with guilt. โYouโll have to celebrate with her without me. Iโฆโ She didnโt finish. Wyatt already understood.
Emergencies never waited. More than once she had been summoned in the middle of the night, plate of food left untouched.
Seeing the worry written on her face, he said firmly, โGo. Iโll have the driver take you. Donโt worry about Mindy. Sheโll understand.โ
Her expression tightened with guilt, but she didnโt hesitate further. She turned and left.
Laurie came up beside Wyatt, watching him stare after Yuniceโs retreating figure. She sighed. โDoctorsโฆ They give most of their lives to strangers, and in doing so, neglect their own families. For those waiting at home, it can be cruel.โ She worried aloud whether Wyatt might grow resentful with time.
But Wyattโs voice was steady, resolute. โThis is Yuniceโs belief. I support her. Sheโs a woman with ideals, and living like this fulfills her. As for Mindyโฆ sheโs a sensible child. Sheโll understand her mother. And when Yunice isnโt here, Iโll be the one to fill that gap.โ
