Chapter 759 Truth Exposed
The widow froze, a flicker of fear flashing in her eyes. But the murmurs of the crowd stiffened her spine again, and she puffed out her chest. โYou all saw that! They attacked me because their crimes are being uncovered! Theyโre trying to silence me, kill me to shut me up!โ
Wyattโs gaze was ice. โYou can keep struggling if you want. But the consequencesโyou wonโt be able to bear them.โ
Her bravado faltered. Meeting his eyes, she instinctively drew back a step. In that instant of hesitation, Wyatt carried Yunice away.
By the time the woman came to her senses and tried to rush after them, the crowd split as several police officers approached.
Her face shifted, but she quickly broke into loud sobs. โOh, my husband, you died so unjustly! The world is cruel, small folk like us canโt fight the powerful! Fine, Iโll join you in death!โ She scrambled toward the window again, but the crowd pulled her back.
โEnough acting,โ one officer said coolly, unfolding a sheet of paper. โThis is a copy of the insurance policy your husband, Jeremy, bought three months ago. The coverage is three million. The beneficiaryโโ he glanced upโโis you.โ
The widow knit her brows, her tone perfectly pitched with sorrow. โYes, I bought him insurance. But he often traveled for work. He wanted peace of mind. Who could have known a simple illness would end like this, killed by a heartless doctorโฆโ
She broke into sobs.
โReasonable enough,โ the officer nodded, then his voice sharpened. โBut can you explain why your previous husband, Mr. Wemble, also purchased an almost identical high-value policy five years ago? He fell to his death within three months. You, again, were the sole beneficiary.โ
Her hand clenched hard, crumpling the tissue in her fist.
The air around the operating room turned heavy.
โTโthatโฆ that was an accident,โ she stammered, her voice cracking for the first time. โThe police already ruled it an accident! Why dig up my old scars?โ
The officer ignored her, nodding to a younger colleague.
The young policeman tapped at a screen, pulling up a video. He turned it for the crowd to see.
The grainy footage showed Jeremy lying in a hospital bed, the widow at his side. There was no audio, but the images were clear. Her face twisted into a cruel sneer as she leaned over his chest. Jeremy began thrashing weakly, agony etched into his features.
She pressed harder on his freshly operated chest, one hand clamping his mouth shut to muffle his cries.
Then Yunice entered, catching the chaos. She rushed to his side, but the widow grabbed and obstructed her, dragging precious seconds. In the scuffle, she even shoved down on his chest again, blood spreading beneath the bandages.
Gasps erupted.
โGood lordโฆ pressing on a surgical wound like thatโthis is murder!โ
โEven a healthy man couldnโt stand that, let alone someone post-surgery!โ
โLook at the poor guyโheโs writhing in silence. If that doctor hadnโt walked in, heโd be dead by now.โ
โSee the doctorโs eyes? Red from exhaustion. She was clearly up all night, yet still making rounds first thing. Sheโs not the villain hereโฆโ
The widowโs face drained white. โThisโthis is fake! Edited! He was in the ICU, how could there be surveillance?!โ
โStrange, isnโt it?โ the officer sneered. โYou know it was ICU. And you should also know family visits arenโt allowed. Yet there you were. As for this footageโฆโ
He leaned in, voice hard. โDid you really think your little scheme was flawless? That others donโt have families too? Your former husbandโs relatives never believed his โaccident.โ Theyโve been investigating you quietly for years. This video was captured with a hidden device they planted on your belongings. And now, here it is.โ
โNo! Itโs not true!โ she shrieked, waving her hands wildly. โItโs a forgery! I loved my husband! Why would I ever want him dead?!โ
The officerโs stare was sharp. โDoctors confirmed itโgiven Jeremyโs condition, the secondary trauma you caused was enough to kill him. Luckily, Director Yunice arrived in time.โ
Another officer emerged from the operating room and whispered in his ear. The first officer straightened and fixed the widow with a chilling look.
โThereโs something else you should know. Your husband just regained consciousness. Heโs still weak, but heโll be able to speak soon. He says heโll tell everything youโve done.โ
The officerโs words rang like a verdict. โAnd I doubt heโll be lying about his own wife.โ
