Chapter 759 Truth Exposed

The widow froze, a flicker of fear flashing in her eyes. But the murmurs of the crowd stiffened her spine again, and she puffed out her chest. โ€œYou all saw that! They attacked me because their crimes are being uncovered! Theyโ€™re trying to silence me, kill me to shut me up!โ€

Wyattโ€™s gaze was ice. โ€œYou can keep struggling if you want. But the consequencesโ€“you wonโ€™t be able to bear them.โ€

Her bravado faltered. Meeting his eyes, she instinctively drew back a step. In that instant of hesitation, Wyatt carried Yunice away.

By the time the woman came to her senses and tried to rush after them, the crowd split as several police officers approached.

Her face shifted, but she quickly broke into loud sobs. โ€œOh, my husband, you died so unjustly! The world is cruel, small folk like us canโ€™t fight the powerful! Fine, Iโ€™ll join you in death!โ€ She scrambled toward the window again, but the crowd pulled her back.

โ€œEnough acting,โ€ one officer said coolly, unfolding a sheet of paper. โ€œThis is a copy of the insurance policy your husband, Jeremy, bought three months ago. The coverage is three million. The beneficiaryโ€”โ€ he glanced upโ€”โ€œis you.โ€

The widow knit her brows, her tone perfectly pitched with sorrow. โ€œYes, I bought him insurance. But he often traveled for work. He wanted peace of mind. Who could have known a simple illness would end like this, killed by a heartless doctorโ€ฆโ€

She broke into sobs.

โ€œReasonable enough,โ€ the officer nodded, then his voice sharpened. โ€œBut can you explain why your previous husband, Mr. Wemble, also purchased an almost identical high-value policy five years ago? He fell to his death within three months. You, again, were the sole beneficiary.โ€

Her hand clenched hard, crumpling the tissue in her fist.

The air around the operating room turned heavy.

โ€œTโ€“thatโ€ฆ that was an accident,โ€ she stammered, her voice cracking for the first time. โ€œThe police already ruled it an accident! Why dig up my old scars?โ€

The officer ignored her, nodding to a younger colleague.

The young policeman tapped at a screen, pulling up a video. He turned it for the crowd to see.

The grainy footage showed Jeremy lying in a hospital bed, the widow at his side. There was no audio, but the images were clear. Her face twisted into a cruel sneer as she leaned over his chest. Jeremy began thrashing weakly, agony etched into his features.

She pressed harder on his freshly operated chest, one hand clamping his mouth shut to muffle his cries.

Then Yunice entered, catching the chaos. She rushed to his side, but the widow grabbed and obstructed her, dragging precious seconds. In the scuffle, she even shoved down on his chest again, blood spreading beneath the bandages.

Gasps erupted.

โ€œGood lordโ€ฆ pressing on a surgical wound like thatโ€“this is murder!โ€

โ€œEven a healthy man couldnโ€™t stand that, let alone someone post-surgery!โ€

โ€œLook at the poor guyโ€“heโ€™s writhing in silence. If that doctor hadnโ€™t walked in, heโ€™d be dead by now.โ€

โ€œSee the doctorโ€™s eyes? Red from exhaustion. She was clearly up all night, yet still making rounds first thing. Sheโ€™s not the villain hereโ€ฆโ€

The widowโ€™s face drained white. โ€œThisโ€“this is fake! Edited! He was in the ICU, how could there be surveillance?!โ€

โ€œStrange, isnโ€™t it?โ€ the officer sneered. โ€œYou know it was ICU. And you should also know family visits arenโ€™t allowed. Yet there you were. As for this footageโ€ฆโ€

He leaned in, voice hard. โ€œDid you really think your little scheme was flawless? That others donโ€™t have families too? Your former husbandโ€™s relatives never believed his โ€˜accident.โ€™ Theyโ€™ve been investigating you quietly for years. This video was captured with a hidden device they planted on your belongings. And now, here it is.โ€

โ€œNo! Itโ€™s not true!โ€ she shrieked, waving her hands wildly. โ€œItโ€™s a forgery! I loved my husband! Why would I ever want him dead?!โ€

The officerโ€™s stare was sharp. โ€œDoctors confirmed itโ€“given Jeremyโ€™s condition, the secondary trauma you caused was enough to kill him. Luckily, Director Yunice arrived in time.โ€

Another officer emerged from the operating room and whispered in his ear. The first officer straightened and fixed the widow with a chilling look.

โ€œThereโ€™s something else you should know. Your husband just regained consciousness. Heโ€™s still weak, but heโ€™ll be able to speak soon. He says heโ€™ll tell everything youโ€™ve done.โ€

The officerโ€™s words rang like a verdict. โ€œAnd I doubt heโ€™ll be lying about his own wife.โ€
