She had grown accustomed to it over the years. Life, as she wandered through it, had shaped her. Yet, warmth brought more tears than suffering ever had.
Mary hugged Celine, gently patting her back. โSilly girl, why so formal?โ
โGrandma, I need to tell you something.โ
โWhat is it?โ
Outside, Adam watched Celine cling to Maryโs shoulder. Her lashes fluttered, silent tears tracing paths down her cheeks. โGrandma, I canโt stay here. I have to leave.โ
Mary froze. โWhy? Did that rascal Adam bully you? Iโll teach him a lesson!โ
Alfred immediately offered a cane. โMadam, use this!โ
Mary took it. โCeline, youโre not going anywhere! Why leave? Iโll make him leave!โ
Adam was speechless. Was he the biological grandson, or adopted? The same question applied to Alfred. It seemed everyone had forgotten the rightful heir.
Celineโs soft voice broke the silence. โGrandma, youโve misunderstood. Adam didnโt bully me. Heโฆ heโs been very kind.โ
Mary was skeptical. โReally?โ
Adam watched Celine hastily wipe away her tears. Hugging Mary tightly, she spoke cheerfully. โOf course! I wasnโt finished. Adam is sending me to Yorhine University. Starting tomorrow, Iโll be living on campus.โ
Mary was stunned. โAdam is sending you to Yorhine? Thatโs wonderful! He finally did something right.โ
Celine released Mary. โGrandma, Iโm leaving tomorrow.โ
โThen Iโll go with you.โ
โItโs fine.โ
โWhy? Parents usually go with their children on the first day. You have no parents, but you have me! Iโll be there!โ
Celineโs reddened eyes glistened. She chuckled softly. โGrandma, a luxury car might scare my classmates. Iโd prefer to be low-key and focus on my studies.โ
Celine, fearing more tears and a reluctance to leave, quickly added, โGrandma, you canโt distract me. Iโll visit when Iโm free.โ
Mary agreed. โAlright, Iโll listen to you.โ
โGrandma, you should rest,โ Celine said softly.
Mary lay back, her expression finally calm. Celine quietly closed the door. Outside, Adam waited.
โMr. Alvarez, Grandmaโs settled. Iโm leaving,โ Celine said steadily.
Adamโs gaze lingered on her tear-brightened eyes, now even brighter after the emotional outpouring. Her pale skin was flushed. Though she stood straight, a stubborn pride in her slender back, he felt a pang in his chest. She looked heartbreakingly fragile.
โIโll have the driver take you,โ he offered.
โThank you, but itโs fine, Mr. Alvarez.โ
Celine left without looking back. Adam watched her slender figure disappear into the night. A heavy feeling settled in his chest. He loosened his tie, gasping for breath.
He should let her go. She was a stand-in bride, an unplanned event. He admitted to a fleeting attraction, but he didn't care for her. He liked Carly.
