Listen to this chapter:

She had grown accustomed to it over the years. Life, as she wandered through it, had shaped her. Yet, warmth brought more tears than suffering ever had.

Mary hugged Celine, gently patting her back. โ€œSilly girl, why so formal?โ€

โ€œGrandma, I need to tell you something.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

Outside, Adam watched Celine cling to Maryโ€™s shoulder. Her lashes fluttered, silent tears tracing paths down her cheeks. โ€œGrandma, I canโ€™t stay here. I have to leave.โ€

Mary froze. โ€œWhy? Did that rascal Adam bully you? Iโ€™ll teach him a lesson!โ€

Alfred immediately offered a cane. โ€œMadam, use this!โ€

Mary took it. โ€œCeline, youโ€™re not going anywhere! Why leave? Iโ€™ll make him leave!โ€

Adam was speechless. Was he the biological grandson, or adopted? The same question applied to Alfred. It seemed everyone had forgotten the rightful heir.

Celineโ€™s soft voice broke the silence. โ€œGrandma, youโ€™ve misunderstood. Adam didnโ€™t bully me. Heโ€ฆ heโ€™s been very kind.โ€

Mary was skeptical. โ€œReally?โ€

Adam watched Celine hastily wipe away her tears. Hugging Mary tightly, she spoke cheerfully. โ€œOf course! I wasnโ€™t finished. Adam is sending me to Yorhine University. Starting tomorrow, Iโ€™ll be living on campus.โ€

Mary was stunned. โ€œAdam is sending you to Yorhine? Thatโ€™s wonderful! He finally did something right.โ€

Celine released Mary. โ€œGrandma, Iโ€™m leaving tomorrow.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll go with you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œWhy? Parents usually go with their children on the first day. You have no parents, but you have me! Iโ€™ll be there!โ€

Celineโ€™s reddened eyes glistened. She chuckled softly. โ€œGrandma, a luxury car might scare my classmates. Iโ€™d prefer to be low-key and focus on my studies.โ€

Celine, fearing more tears and a reluctance to leave, quickly added, โ€œGrandma, you canโ€™t distract me. Iโ€™ll visit when Iโ€™m free.โ€

Mary agreed. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll listen to you.โ€

โ€œGrandma, you should rest,โ€ Celine said softly.

Mary lay back, her expression finally calm. Celine quietly closed the door. Outside, Adam waited.

โ€œMr. Alvarez, Grandmaโ€™s settled. Iโ€™m leaving,โ€ Celine said steadily.

Adamโ€™s gaze lingered on her tear-brightened eyes, now even brighter after the emotional outpouring. Her pale skin was flushed. Though she stood straight, a stubborn pride in her slender back, he felt a pang in his chest. She looked heartbreakingly fragile.

โ€œIโ€™ll have the driver take you,โ€ he offered.

โ€œThank you, but itโ€™s fine, Mr. Alvarez.โ€

Celine left without looking back. Adam watched her slender figure disappear into the night. A heavy feeling settled in his chest. He loosened his tie, gasping for breath.

He should let her go. She was a stand-in bride, an unplanned event. He admitted to a fleeting attraction, but he didn't care for her. He liked Carly.
