"Adam," Carly asked, "did you forget your promises? You said you were done with Celine, that you'd divorce her soon, and that you wouldn't sleep with her again. Have you forgotten everything you said?"
The women's dormitory was quiet, allowing Carly's emotional voice to carry clearly to Celine. Celine poured a glass of water and took a sip; it tasted oddly bitter. Adam remained silent, frowning.
"Adam, I miss you terribly. I really want to see you. Please come and stay with me now."
Adam walked away, phone in hand. Celine watched, assuming he was going to meet Carly. She almost forgot about Nikki—a brief fling—while Carly was the woman he truly loved. A single call, a single word from Carly, and he'd be back. That night hadn't changed their relationship. A bittersweet smile touched her lips.
Adam stepped into the corridor, his brow furrowed. "Carly," he said, "I can't leave right now."
Carly was furious. "Why? Are you really going to stay with Celine? Let me be clear: you must choose between us. If you don't come tonight, you'll regret it!" She ended the call abruptly, leaving Adam with his lips pressed into a thin, cold line.
He clutched the phone, glancing back at Celine's dormitory. In the past, he would have rushed to Carly without hesitation, but now he hesitated.
His phone dinged—a new Instagram friend request from Robin. He accepted it immediately. Robin promptly shared a screenshot of her chat with Celine:
"Robin," Celine had written, "my friend slept with her husband once, but he ignored her afterward. Why?"
Following that night, Celine felt alienated from Adam and confided in her best friend, who was initially unaware of the situation. "Probably your friend couldn't satisfy her husband in bed," Robin replied, "and after one encounter, he grew weary."
Robin, understanding now, sent the screenshot to Adam. Summarizing her complex emotions, she simply wrote: "Celine endures so much because she loves you."
Adam's heart melted. During his confusion with Nikki, he hadn't considered Celine's emotional turmoil. She hadn't complained, unlike Carly, who cried and called whenever she felt wronged. He remembered Celine's teary, delicate eyes, cold and lonely. Loving him seemed to bring her endless pain.
In the dormitory, Celine stood alone for a long time, staring blankly. She was quiet and isolated in the soft light. Suddenly, her phone rang. She turned, glass in hand, and collided with Adam. He had returned.
Their eyes met, and Celine's mind went blank. "Why are you back?" she asked, surprised by his unexpected return after she'd assumed he'd gone to Carly.
