No matter how hard Celine tried, the end of the road seemed unreachable. Exhausted, she stopped walking. Weakness overwhelmed her, and intense pain forced her to crouch slowly. She wrapped her slender arms around her knees, burying her tear-soaked face. Her delicate shoulders trembled as she cried uncontrollably. It hurt to lose Adam. It hurt so much. She couldn't even explain what she loved about him; he hadn't been kind. But wouldn't everyone fall for a few jerks in their lifetime? Clutching the emerald necklace he'd given her, she knew she had lost him—lost the person she loved.
At that moment, a Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up beside the road. Adam, in the driver's seat, watched Celine sob uncontrollably through the gleaming windshield. A blood-red hue crept into his deep black eyes as his fingers tightened on the steering wheel. A dull, pervasive ache, not sharp, spread through his heart.
The melodic ringtone of his phone broke the silence. It was Carly. Her cheerful voice asked, "Adam, did you and Celine get a divorce already?"
He looked at Celine and answered hoarsely, "Yes."
"That's wonderful! Hurry back to the hospital. I want to see your divorce certificate!" She hung up, satisfied.
His gaze dimmed; the blood-red tint in his eyes faded, replaced by his usual cold indifference. He and Celine were divorced. It was over. They would be strangers. The person he loved was Carly; he needed to treat her well. He pressed the gas pedal, speeding away in his Rolls-Royce Phantom back to the hospital.
Celine returned to her hostel. As she opened the door, colorful ribbons sprayed onto her, accompanied by little bangs.
"Congratulations! Did you and Mr. Alvarez go out again?"
Hailey and Robin walked in, their smiles freezing as they saw Celine's pale, swollen, and red-rimmed eyes.
"Celine, your hands are so cold! What happened? Don't scare me!"
Celine showed them the divorce certificate. "Nothing. Adam and I got a divorce."
"What?!" Hailey and Robin gasped. "What happened between you and Mr. Alvarez? Why did you two suddenly get a divorce?"
Before they could finish, Celine fainted. That night, she developed a high fever (107 degrees), her body alternating between burning hot and freezing cold. Following the divorce, she became gravely ill.
Carly remained in the hospital. After a week, her wrist wound almost healed. Adam and Lucy cared for her meticulously, ensuring a quick recovery.
Tracy arrived with fruit to visit Carly. "Carly, when are you getting discharged?"
Carly, her complexion healthy again, answered, "Tomorrow."
Adam handed her a carefully peeled apple. For a week, he'd brought fruit to the ward and worked there, never leaving her side.
Carly took a bite, her face filled with happiness.
Tracy looked at Adam. "Mr. Alvarez, I heard you've divorced Celine. Is that true?"
Carly joyfully confirmed, "Yes. She's no longer Mrs. Alvarez."
Tracy, who always looked down on Celine, felt happy for Carly. Remembering something, she laughed. "I heard Celine fell seriously ill after the divorce and hasn't been to class."
