Hailey heard the manโs mutterings and looked at Declan. The dim streetlights illuminated Declanโs cold expression. Up close, Hailey saw a hint of youthfulness on his face. He had been forced to grow up too soon, but he was only about her ageโthey were both in their first year of university. He was expressionless and silent.
Hailey began, โYouโโ
Before she could finish, the weight on her shoulders lifted as Declan released her. He said coldly, โYou forgot your things.โ He carried all the supplements she had given him.
โThereโs no need,โ she replied. โItโs a gift for Mrs. Zamora. Iโm grateful you saved me.โ
Declan said nothing but strode away, holding the supplements. Hailey quickly followed.
She realized Declan had led her from the dark, wet alley to the main street. He even called her an Uber, opening the car door and placing the supplements inside. He looked at her.
โGo home. Donโt come back. Iโve already accepted your gratitude.โ
Haileyโs heart softened. Underneath his cold exterior, she sensed a warm, passionate heart. He had claimed her as his girlfriend to protect her from that man. Heโd walked in front of her, leading her out of the alley and ensuring she got into the carโhis way of protecting her. This was how a man protected a woman. But didn't he think she was ugly?
Ewan had never worried about Haileyโs safety; he believed her ugliness protected her. In his opinion, she was perfectly safe. Hailey obediently entered the car. โGoodbye, Declan.โ
Ignoring her, Declan turned and left. Hailey leaned against the window, watching his retreating back as he disappeared into a dark alley.
She returned to the Lambert residence. Linda had made sweet and sour pork ribs for dinner, and Hailey quickly had seconds. โLinda, I want another serving.โ
Linda quickly replied, โMy dear, two servings are enough. You canโt eat too much, or you might get indigestion. Iโm already making some herbal soup for you.โ
Only then did Hailey put down her utensils. She had been hungry after seeing the sweet and sour pork ribs, but now she was full.
Suddenly, her phone rang. It was James. He had been working in another city for the past few days.
Hailey answered. โHey, Dad.โ
โAllie, I heard that Shaw family kid bullied you? Donโt worry. When I get back, Iโll make the Shaws apologize.โ
James felt bad for Hailey, but she wasnโt sad. Honestly, sheโd never had a real relationship with Ewan; they hadnโt developed any romantic feelings.
โDad, if Ewan doesnโt like me, you donโt have to force him. I donโt like him anymore either, and Iโve returned the Shawsโ family relic bracelet. Weโve broken off the engagement. There are no ties between us.โ
James didnโt comment. โAllie, Iโll settle this when I get back.โ He hung up.
That night, Hailey didnโt return to the female hostel. She went back to her well-furnished room and took a relaxing milk and rose bath.
She thought of Declan. Rumor had it his father died when he was in junior high. His mother was blind, and his sisterโฆ Had he shouldered the burden of supporting his family at such a young age?
How did her facial birthmark compare to his experiences? So many girls liked him, but what was his type?
Hailey recalled how he looked at Aileen. He loved his younger sister. If he had a girlfriend, would he treat her as gently?
