Hailee stopped struggling when she heard Ewanโs words. She quietly got into the front passenger seat of the Ferrari. Ewan took the driverโs seat and shot her a dark look. โAre you this curious about Declan?โ
At first, she refused to get in his car, but now she had done it solely for Declan. Hailee looked up at Ewan. โEwan, donโt you think youโre acting really weird?โ
Ewan froze. โIโve already let you be with Melody. Sheโs your girlfriend now. Sheโs got a great figure, and sheโs a dancer. You like that type, donโt you? You should be with her, so why are you still bothering me?โ
He gripped the steering wheel tighter. โDonโt tell me youโve developed feelings for me.โ
Seeing the mockery and sarcasm in Haileeโs eyes, Ewanโs anger flared. He sneered. โDonโt flatter yourself, Allie. I could never like you.โ
โGood,โ Hailee replied. She wasnโt interested in his feelings. His affection was too late and meaningless.
Ewan realized his feelings stemmed from possessiveness. Hailee had always been around him, but now she was interested in Declan, his rival. This made him uneasy. If Hailee was trying to get his attention, she had succeeded.
Half an hour later, the Ferrari pulled up in front of a construction site. Hailee got out; she had never been to one before. The environment was as chaotic as Declanโs home. She accidentally stepped in the mud with her leather shoes.
Ewan noticed. โYour shoes are dirty. Do you want me to get a tissue to clean them?โ
Hailee shook her head. โNo. You said you were bringing me here to see Declan. Where is he?โ
Ewan pointed with his chin. โOver there.โ
Hailee saw a group of workers in blue uniforms and yellow hard hats. Among them stood a tall, cold figure: Declan. He was working at the construction site. Hailee had heard Hattie mention Declan worked multiple jobs, including at construction sites. Now, she knew it was true.
She watched him. His uniform was covered in dust, and sweat dripped as he carried cement bags. He was focused, unaware of their arrival.
Ewan smirked. โSee that? Is that really the guy you like? How could someone like him deserve your attention?โ
Haileeโs gaze remained on Declan. He was lifting bag after bag of cement; he even carried nine at once. The heavy load made his strong back bend slightly. Hailee turned to Ewan. โLetโs go back.โ
Without another word, she started walking away. Ewan happily followed. He believed that once Hailee saw Declanโs reality, she would give up on him.
โEwan,โ Hailee interrupted. โIโm leaving because I donโt want to disturb Declan. He has his pride, and I hope you wonโt bother him in the future either.โ
Ewan froze. He thought she had lost interest in Declan, but she was simply protecting his pride.
