Haileyโs lips curled into a smile. โI didnโt want to disturb you, so Iโve been hanging out with Declan at school.โ Her words made Pamela smile.
Just then, Oscar showed up, and Hailey left the room. After settling into Oscarโs office, Oscar handed Hailey a report and said, โMs. Halley, the patientโs report is out.โ
โHow is it?โ Hailey asked.
Shaking his head, Oscar announced, โThe patient has late-stage cancer.โ
Stunned, Hailey questioned, โLate-stage cancer? Are you sure? Mrs. Zamora has been fine all this while.โ
โIโm sure. The patient must have been diagnosed a few years ago. She knew about it, but she never received any treatment or told anyone.โ
โAnd now, the cancer has spread to her heart and brain. She only has two months left.โ
Hailey slumped into the chair. She never expected Pamela to have only two months left to live. She couldnโt help but wonder why Pamela never told anyone or sought treatment. Even worse, her children had no idea.
Nicole Walsh and Aileen sat beside Pamela. Aileen poured a glass of water and offered it.
โHave some water, Mom.โ
Leaning against the bedhead, Pamela took a sip and said, โThank you so much, Ms. Walsh.โ
Nicole held Pamelaโs hand. โThereโs no need. Weโve been neighbors for a long time. I know it hasnโt been easy raising two children alone.โ
Glancing at her teenage daughter, Pamela said, โWe managed, no matter how tough it was. Itโs going to be tough on Declan now that heโs an adult.โ Nicole sighed. โDeclanโs a strong and outstanding man, just like his father. Heโs grown into a great man.โ
At the mention of Declanโs father, Pamelaโs eyes reddened. Nicole immediately realized she had misspoken. Declanโs father had always been the Zamorasโ sacred pain; a mere mention of him reopened emotional wounds.
In fact, Pamela hadnโt been born blind. She lost her sight from crying excessively after losing her husband.
Nicole quickly changed the subject, commenting, โThat girl, Hailey, is really pretty. She has a small face, fair skin, and bright eyes. Even her figure is great. Iโve never seen such a pretty girl before. Sheโs definitely a city girl.โ
Pamela beamed. โIs that so? Actually, I could tell sheโs a sweet and beautiful girl just by how she talks.โ
Smiling proudly, Aileen chimed in, โMom, Hailey is really pretty.โ
Nicole added, โI think sheโs well-educated too, since she goes to the same university as Declan. Most importantly, I have a feeling sheโs from a prominent family with connections. She got you transferred to this hospital with just one call. Besides, that doctor who examined you? Iโve seen him on television before. Heโs a very skilled doctor.โ
โIs she Declanโs girlfriend? Iโm happy for him. Heโs found himself such a good girlfriend.โ
Pamela had been listening silently until she heard that statement. โYou mustnโt make such claims. It could ruin that young ladyโs reputation.โ
โIโm sure Hailey is pursued by many guys. Besides, Declan isnโt that lucky to date someone like her. He didnโt tell me heโs dating anyone.โ
Patting Pamelaโs hand, Nicole said, โI know what you mean, but Declanโs grown up now. Heโs got to find a partner someday. Donโt you want him to get married and have children? Heโll be alone forever if he doesnโt.โ
Pamela said nothing, while Aileen chirped naively, โDeclan wonโt be alone. He still has me.โ
