Celineโs waist ached from hitting the table. Her heart ached too. Even Carly, who was at the hospital, felt sorry for her; a wife so badly hurt and suffering so much was pitiful.
Carly's insolence stemmed from Adam's excessive pampering. He spoiled her rotten.
A wry smile touched Celine's lips. "Alfred," she said, "what happened today? Did someone give Grandma a picture?"
Alfred produced a photograph from his pocket. It showed Adam and Carly dancing in a bar.
"Someone sent Mrs. Alvarez Senior this photo this morning, claiming Mr. Alvarez and Carly were having an affair," he explained. "Mrs. Alvarez Senior was furious and immediately sent men to retrieve Carly."
Mary adored Celine and didn't want her to suffer.
Celine examined the photo, lost in thought. "Alfred, who do you think sent Grandma this picture?"
"The sender wanted to expose Mr. Alvarez's affair, so they likely support you," Alfred reasoned.
Celine smiled bitterly. No wonder Adam didn't believe her. Everyone assumed she'd sent the photo. It seemed to benefit her regardless. If not Celine, it meant a friend acted on her behalf to teach Carly a lesson.
Mary's frail voice broke the silence: "Adamโฆ"
"Mrs. Alvarez Senior is calling for Mr. Alvarez," Alfred pointed out. Adam had broken Mary's heart, potentially causing a rift between them.
Celine's phone rang. It was Lucy. Lucy's cold voice filled Celine's ear.
"Celine, what have you done? Carly's hospitalized! Come to the hospital immediately!"
"Okay," Celine replied, expressionless. "I'm on my way."
After hanging up, Celine grabbed her bag and left.
"Mrs. Alvarez, are you really going to the hospital?" Alfred worried about her facing a difficult situation.
"Don't worry, Alfred. I know what I'm doing," Celine reassured him.
Celine entered the VIP ward. Carly, pale and weak in a hospital gown, sat on the bed. Adam and Lucy were with her.
Lucy's expression darkened upon seeing Celine. She yelled, "Celine, the doctor just checked Carly. Thankfully, she's okay. I never thought you'd involve Mrs. Alvarez Senior! How could you hurt Carly like that? If not for Mr. Alvarez, Carly could have been gravely injured or even killed! You're cruel!"
Celine remained silent. Meanwhile, Adam poured Carly water.
"Feed me," Carly pouted.
Adam lifted the glass to her lips. She then looked up at him. "Adam, your grandmother must dislike me even more after what Celine's done." She tugged at his sleeve. "So you must like me even more to make up for it."
Adam ruffled her hair affectionately; she gave him a dazzling smile, then discreetly raised an eyebrow, seemingly challenging Celine.
Celine watched them, feeling awkward and ostracized.
"Celine, what are you standing there for? You started this, so apologize to Carly!" Lucy demanded. Lucy had summoned Celine only to force an apology.
Adam, having heard Lucy, turned to Celine, curious about her reaction.
