Chapter 418

Declan spoke up. โ€œFirst of all, you threw yourself at me. Plus, Iโ€™m single. Maybe I was just acting on impulse.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re admitting youโ€™re a jerk, huh? In that case, Iโ€™ll just have to let you jerk me around,โ€ Halley quipped, though she knew he wasnโ€™t, of course.

Declan fell silent.

Just then, Declanโ€™s friend, Justin, walked in. โ€œDamn, Declan, where did this beauty come from?โ€ Heโ€™d been looking for Declan, only to find this unexpected sight. His eyes widened at Haileyโ€™s presence.

Hailey quickly stepped back from Declan, offering a charming smile. โ€œHi, Iโ€™m Hailey Young.โ€

โ€œJustin Griffin,โ€ he replied. โ€œSo, Declan, you finally got yourself a girlfriend, huh?โ€

Declan immediately denied it. โ€œSheโ€™s not my girlfriend.โ€

Hailey declared confidently, โ€œYes, I am!โ€

Declan was momentarily speechless.

Justin laughed. โ€œDamn, Declan. I thought you were destined to be single forever. Youโ€™ve never been interested in anyone before, but now I get itโ€”youโ€™re just picky. Looks like Hailey put all those other girls chasing after you to shame.โ€

Declan set down the spatula and turned to Justin. โ€œLetโ€™s talk outside.โ€

Without another word, they stepped outside.

โ€œJustin, get to the point. Why are you here?โ€ Declan asked.

โ€œPhantom has resurfaced. Heโ€™s here.โ€

Phantom was the infamous drug lord responsible for Declanโ€™s fatherโ€™s death. Years ago, his father had gone undercover in Phantomโ€™s cartel, only to be exposed and executed. For years, Declan had been tracking him. And now, Phantom had finally resurfaced.

A cold wind swept through, making Declanโ€™s black T-shirt ripple. His eyes turned steely as he replied, โ€œGot it.โ€

Just as he turned to leave, Justin called out, โ€œDeclan, that girlfriend of yours is gorgeous.โ€

Declan pressed his lips together. โ€œWeโ€™re not a couple.โ€

โ€œOh really?โ€ Justin replied, studying him closely. โ€œWeโ€™ve known each other since we were kids. If you werenโ€™t interested, you wouldnโ€™t let her get this close. Unless, of course, you actuallyโ€ฆโ€

Declan stayed quiet for a moment before responding. โ€œFrom the start, I knew I couldnโ€™t offer her a future. Thereโ€™s no point in getting involved.โ€

โ€œShe comes from a good family,โ€ Justin chuckled. โ€œRich, beautiful, sweet, and totally into you. Declan, are you really telling me you donโ€™t feel anything? Youโ€™re overthinking it, man. That girl is crazy about you.โ€

โ€œI need to head back,โ€ Declan said, and with that, he stepped back into the house.

Halley met him in the room. โ€œDid Justin leave?โ€

โ€œJustin always brings good things to eat,โ€ Pamela commented.

Declan set the dishes on the table. โ€œLetโ€™s eat.โ€

Hailey quickly sat down. Declan had even made fried chicken wings. He picked up a piece and placed it on Haileyโ€™s plate. โ€œThank you, Declan,โ€ she said with a smile.

As Declan set down his cutlery, he noticed Hailey watching him, her eyes filled with anticipation. She subtly pushed her plate closer to him, silently asking for another piece. Pamela quickly said, โ€œDeclan, hurry up and give Hailey a piece, too!โ€

Hailey gazed at him with hopeful eyes.

Brian then leaned over and placed a wing on Haileyโ€™s plate. Hailey had wanted to try his fried chicken wings ever since she first saw them; her lips curved into a smile. โ€œThis is amazing!โ€ she exclaimed. She had expected them to be good, but she hadnโ€™t expected them to be this incredible.

โ€œYou should come over more often and let Declan cook for you,โ€ Pamela chimed in.

Hailey looked at Declan, her smile brightening. โ€œIโ€™ll definitely be back.โ€

Just as dinner was ending, a sudden rumbling sound from outside, followed by a flash of lightning and a sharp crack of thunder, announced the impending storm. Moments later, the sky opened up, and a torrential downpour began to fall.
