Chapter 11: Not Eavesdropping Anymore

Finished

Caleb’s breath hitched after dealing with the last person, and he nearly collapsed.

“Die, Conrat’s lackey!” A brick thrown by someone caught Caleb off guard, hitting him squarely.

Blood trickled down his forehead, and his vision flickered, blurring the scene before him. Am I going to die? Well, it’s not so bad. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and it won’t be the last. Rather than live and deal with the Quirall family, I would rather…

As Caleb collapsed, his consciousness slowly faded.

“Caleb!” In his final moment, he thought he heard Gianna’s voice. No way. Why is she here? Did Raquel call her? I doubt it. She’s probably enjoying her time with Jesse and is too busy to bother with me. This feigned concern disgusts me!

When he opened his eyes, all he could see was a white ceiling.

The scent of disinfectant filled his nostrils as numerous individuals in white coats hurried about. Upon noticing he was awake, someone exclaimed joyfully, “Caleb, you’re finally awake! That’s wonderful!”

Surprised, Caleb looked up and saw Gianna. I guess I wasn’t hallucinating her voice before I passed out.

Before he could speak, another female voice interjected sarcastically, “It took quite an effort to save you. Why force yourself when you’re clearly not capable?”

Realizing it was Yelena, Caleb instantly lost interest in conversing.

Although unsure of Yelena’s intentions, he had made it clear that he had no further ties with the Quixall family before leaving. Why did she bother to save me if she despises me? She could’ve simply scattered my ashes into the river, and we’d have nothing to do with each other anymore. This clinginess is so unsightly.

“Speak up! As long as you’re alive, you’re still my brother!” Originally somewhat worried about Caleb’s injuries, Yelena’s concern turned to anger at his unwillingness to speak to her.

It didn’t matter to her that he didn’t bear the surname Quixall because she had showered him with affection back in the day!

Ever since his release from prison, he had disregarded their concern, treating the Quixall family as if they were nothing.

Such an attitude infuriated Yelena.

“Yelena, stop talking. Caleb’s still hurt. It’s normal for him not to want to speak,” Gianna said.

Turning to the nearby doctor, she asked, “Doctor, how is Caleb’s injury? Is there a chance of any lingering effects?”

After examining Caleb, the doctor responded, “This gentleman has suffered a brain injury. Although he is currently out of immediate danger, I would recommend a further stay in the hospital for observation, to prevent any subsequent complications.”

Caleb casually said, “No need.”

Gianna became frantic. “Caleb, how can you not stay in the hospital? Your bandages aren’t even off yet. At least wait till they’re removed before you leave!”

With a mocking smile, Caleb placed his hand on the gauze. It doesn’t matter if I have one or not. No one has ever helped me dress a wound during my five- year stay in prison. I survived by relying on myself and no one else.

With a strong tug, he tore the gauze away.

Everyone in the ward was left utterly dumbstruck, unable to believe that someone would dare to gamble with their life!

Gianna was filled with immense regret, wishing she hadn’t said what prompted him to do such a thing.

At that moment, a person hurriedly rushed into the ward.

“Caleb, how could you risk your life like this when you’re so badly injured?” Jesse’s voice trembled. “Yelena’s just worried about you. Don’t take it out on yourself even if you’re angry!”

Caleb sneered, “Decided to show yourself, hmm? Wouldn’t it be better to keep eavesdropping by the door?”
