Chapter 17: Where Did You Roam At Night?

The receptionist was deeply regretful. “Is that so? I hope you find a nice place to live soon.”

Caleb nodded.

After leaving the hotel, he was about to step into a fast-food restaurant to grab a bite when he saw a woman with voluminous, wavy hair approaching him. It was Yelena, and for some reason, she apologized. “Caleb, I was wrong yesterday. I shouldn’t have lost my temper with you.”

Caleb didn’t know what transformation Yelena went through last night, but it was quite drastic as she continued. “My parents scolded me, and Jesse urged me to have you back. Can you forgive me, just this once?”

Caleb didn’t even glance at her as he walked around her and headed toward the fast-food restaurant.

Yelena stretched out her arm to block his way. “You’re the son of the Quixall family. Dining in a place like this doesn’t suit your status. Come home with me. We’ve prepared your favorite dish. It’s far cleaner than here.”

No matter where Caleb went, Yelena kept blocking his path, so he stopped trying to leave. “You can’t stomach tainted food, but what about tainted people?”

“What does that mean?” Yelena paused for a moment, and when she realized his meaning, she was livid. “Caleb, don’t be ungrateful! I left my job to find you, and our parents didn’t sleep a wink, sending people to search for you all night! Raquel told me that you spent the whole night with that b*tch Gianna in her family’s private hotel! You didn’t consider our feelings at all!”

With a mocking smile, Caleb taunted, “Aren’t you afraid the Sherman family might hear you? You should keep your voice down.”

He didn’t care either way because only the Quixall family would suffer.

“Why would I be afraid when she already did it? We’ve all been fooled by her. She’s nothing but a wh*re!” The more Yelena thought about it, the angrier she became. “We would’ve found Caleb if Gianna hadn’t hidden him! I can’t believe he’s grown so stubborn after leaving prison, so much so that he doesn’t even return home! He doesn’t care about us at all!”

Caleb withdrew his smile. “Speak more respectfully. Don’t involve others.”

Regardless of what happened, Gianna had helped him. As such, he thought it was unjust for her to be insulted by the heartless Quixall family. In the past, they called her Gia, but now that she disobeyed them, she’s a pariah. The Quixall family must’ve grown stronger over the years to have the courage to oppose the Sherman family. In the past, a lawyer’s letter alone was enough to give them a run for their money.

Yelena sneered, “What, you’re already feeling sorry for her? Raquel was once your fiancée, wasn’t she? How could you be so heartless, standing by while others mistreated her and assisting another woman?”

Caleb scoffed with disdain. She’s seriously calling me heartless? How absurd. Raquel rushed into the embrace of another, but they turned a blind eye to it. Meanwhile, Gianna helped him find a hotel to stay in for the night, yet she ended up being scolded. The difference in their actions is laughably large. “I won’t be returning. I have no more ties with the Quixall family.”

Caleb wasn’t an idiot, so he wouldn’t be fooled by such crude manipulations.

He grew annoyed. “Go ahead. Just leave me out of it. I want to live a life without any of you in it.”

He felt no attachment to his former family, swiftly rounding the street corner, heading toward the next street.

Yelena stared at his retreating figure, then made a phone call. “It’s me. He’s left, yes, just keep an eye out.”

After hanging up the phone, Yelena smirked. “Caleb, you’re born into the Quixall family, and even in death, you’ll remain a part of it. Even if ties should be severed, we should be the ones to initiate it!”
