Chapter 24: I Brought This Upon Myself

Jesse’s decision was met with applause and praise from the Quixall family. Deborah was so moved that she couldn’t help but wipe away her tears.

“Jesse, you really are so understanding. If only all of my children were like you, it would save me a lot of…”

Jesse looked at Caleb with a smile.

“I’m a part of the Quixall family. It’s only fair that I share the burden of your and Dad’s concerns.”

While others might have overlooked it, Caleb caught the provocative glint in Jesse’s eyes, a demeanor he found utterly repellent. Clenching his fist discreetly, Caleb reminded himself that it wasn’t the right time yet. He had to be patient. Only when the right opportunity presented itself could he finally break free from this suffocating nightmare.

Yelena gave Caleb a slight push. “What are you staring at? Aren’t you going to get Jesse something to drink?” She transformed back into the flamboyant daughter of the Quixall family, her moment of hesitation fleeting, almost like an illusion.

Caleb leisurely poured a cup of tea and handed it to Jesse. After taking a sip, Jesse furrowed his brow. However, he still insisted on finishing it in one go. Yelena pressed her hand against the cup and let out a sharp cry. “Caleb, are you trying to burn Jesse alive?”

Caleb had felt the tea himself. It was entirely ordinary, just slightly warm. The Quixall family certainly has a talent for turning small matters into grand dramas. Jesse is a grown man, yet he appears so fragile that even drinking warm tea seems beyond his tolerance. He might as well stick to drinking distilled water every day.

Although Jesse said he was fine, his face betrayed a sense of deep grievance.

“This is a gesture of kindness from Caleb. I’d drink it even if it burned me.”

George’s anger flared once more. “Caleb, I just reprimanded you, and now you’re tormenting your younger brother again! I need to find a way to put an end to this behavior!”

Caleb feared nothing. The antics of the Quixall family were nothing but repetitive, and he had grown tired of them. Truth be told, his time with his prison mates had been more entertaining than his family.

Trying to scare him was like flaunting amateur skills before a seasoned master.

George had intended to go to the living room to retrieve his whip, but the sight of Caleb’s indifferent demeanor made him abruptly change his mind. Caleb was tough as nails. Taking a beating seemed almost like a reward to him.

George’s expression flickered through a variety of emotions before he abruptly turned and stormed out of the room. The door closed with a thunderous bang, leaving Deborah shaken with fear and weighed down by her anguish over Caleb’s injuries.

“Caleb, how could you offer Jesse hot tea? You know Jesse has a weak heart.”

Caleb let out a scoff and remarked, “I’ve never heard of hot tea being able to scald a heart disease out of someone.”

Lost for words, Deborah quietly left the room to replace the tea. Yelena said through gritted teeth, “It’s no surprise Mom considered changing your last name. You’re nothing like the rest of the Quixall family.”

The atmosphere was heavy with heart-wrenching sorrow, as though Caleb had committed some unforgivable crime. When George and Deborah were present, Raquel had held her tongue, but the moment they left, she exhaled a sigh of relief and voiced her complaint.

“Caleb, you’re really out of line! Jesse has been so good to you, yet you constantly oppose him. What exactly do you want?”

Caleb retorted, “What exactly do you think you have that I would want? Your family’s gullibility that has you all being played like puppets? Or perhaps your tendency to accuse others without understanding the whole picture?”

Raquel’s lips trembled as she struggled to respond. After a long pause, she said, “No one is falsely accusing you. You’ve brought this upon yourself.”

Caleb erupted into laughter, the kind that shook his entire frame and made Raquel shudder. Its intensity sent chills down her spine, leaving her questioning whether he had truly lost his sanity. Unable to bear the discomfort and fearing Caleb’s demeanor, she pulled away from him with an expression of disgust.

After laughing, Caleb wiped away his tears. “Yes. I brought this upon myself! The biggest mistake ever made was genuinely caring about you all!”
