Chapter 81: You Need To Present Evidence

Seiren’s words caught in her throat. She couldn’t say a thing. All she could do was stand there, helplessly watching as Deborah’s figure vanished from sight.

Raquel, satisfied, gently brushed the scar on Seiren’s neck and said, “You handled that well. I’ll cover your brother’s tuition for the next three years.”

Seiren trembled, unsure whether it was from anger or fear.

Raquel, smiling with smug satisfaction, lightly brushed her hand against Seiren’s shoulder.

The girl, to her, seemed like a symbol of misfortune–something she was keen to avoid catching herself.

The sharp sound of Raquel’s high heels striking the floor echoed through the room like a triumphant fanfare.

Seiren could no longer contain her emotions. Tears streamed down her face as guilt overwhelmed her.

For the sake of her brother’s future, she had betrayed her conscience.

From that moment on, she doubted she would have the courage to face Caleb again.

Upstairs, Caleb had just finished tending to his wound and was settling down to sleep.

However, just as he was drifting off, his door was suddenly flung open.

With a face full of anger, Deborah demanded, “Caleb, how could you do such a thing? Seiren is just a maid. She’s no threat to you! Wasn’t picking on your little brother bad enough? Now you’re going after someone who can’t even defend herself?”

Caleb was caught off guard by Deborah’s sudden outburst in the middle of the night.

Despite the accusations, he refused to admit to something he hadn’t done.

“When have I ever picked on a maid? Mrs. Quixall, if you’re going to make accusations, you need to present evidence. As the lady of the Quixall family, it’s vital you set an example. If not, others might follow your lead, which could bring ruin to the family name.”

Deborah might not understand the complexities of life, but she knew she had to stand up for Seiren that night.

She feared that if Caleb found ways to express his anger unchecked, his behavior might only escalate in the future.

“All right, if you insist you didn’t do it, then I’ll bring Seiren here to confront you.”

Deborah headed downstairs in search of Seiren and happened to encounter Raquel along the way.

Raquel asked in surprise, “Mrs. Quixall, why are you back? Did Caleb hurt you again? I’ll teach him a lesson for you.”

Deborah shook her head.

Raquel’s expression turned serious.

“All right, I’ll fetch Seiren for you. She’s a bit shaken, so she might take some time to come upstairs. Please be patient.”

With that, Raquel headed down the stairs.

Deborah, left waiting, thought she might as well take the opportunity to investigate Caleb’s room for clues.

Without hesitation, she returned to his room and began searching for any signs of a struggle.

When Caleb saw Deborah come back alone, he sneered, “Mrs. Quixall, don’t waste my time if you don’t have any evidence.”

Defiant, Deborah shot back, “Raquel has gone to call Seiren. When she gets here, the truth will come to light.”

Caleb smirked mockingly. “How amusing! I’d love to see how a maid, who falls apart at the tiniest insult, suddenly finds the guts to twist the story.”

Frustrated, Deborah continued to rummage around the room. However, Caleb’s room was incredibly modest, with everything out in plain sight. Even the drawers were spotless, containing only a few miscellaneous items.

Despite her efforts, Deborah came up empty-handed.

Caleb grew impatient. “Mrs. Quixall, if there’s nothing here, don’t force the issue. Please leave. I need to rest.”
