Chapter 83: Every Medicine Has Its Side Effect
Although Caleb was busy arguing with Deborah, he was still able to clearly hear the conversation between Raquel and Yelena. He could only feel an overwhelming sense of irony. In the evening, Raquel had been particularly attentive to him. However, after he rebuked her a couple of times, she instantly changed her stance, showing him her feisty side.
Caleb was uncertain about who was orchestrating the charade that night, but he was certain that Raquel had a significant role in it. Without Raquel's instigation, it was unlikely Deborah would have come knocking. Upon seeing Yelena arrive, Deborah instantly felt more confident.
“You claim it wasn’t you, so how do you explain the broken porcelain in your room?”
She thought she had found the evidence, a hint of smugness flickering in her eyes. Caleb cast a casual glance at Raquel.
“That’s a question for your future daughter-in-law.”
Bewildered, Deborah turned her gaze to Raquel, unable to grasp the connection between the piece of porcelain and the latter. Everyone turned to look at Raquel, causing her to panic. However, she soon regained her composure.
“After I sent Mr. Quixall off, I discovered that Seiren had been assaulted. In an attempt to calm her down, I immediately rushed to her room to inquire about what had happened. Both Seiren and Agnes can vouch for this matter. If you don’t believe me, Mrs. Quixall, you can ask Agnes herself.”
Deborah gave a nod before summoning the housekeeper.
“Go fetch Agnes, I need to speak with her.”
The housekeeper dared not delay, swiftly running off into the distance. In no time at all, Agnes had rushed over.
“Mrs. Quixall, you wanted to see me?”
Deborah hummed in agreement.
“You have always been close to Seiren. When I returned this evening, it was also you who personally informed me of her illness. Raquel said that she stayed in Seiren’s room until I returned. Is that true?”
Her eyes held a subtle hint of anticipation. To prove Caleb was responsible, it was essential to first establish Raquel’s innocence.
This ploy would fail. Caleb would undoubtedly latch onto this point, claiming that Seiren’s injury was caused by Raquel. He had stayed in his room all night, not going anywhere.
Agnes hesitated for a moment, cautiously stealing a glance at Raquel. Raquel curved her lips into a smile.
“Why are you looking at me like that, Agnes? Mrs. Quixall told you to speak the truth. You’re acting as if I’m giving you pressure.”
Deborah nodded in agreement. “Raquel isn’t the type of person to do that, so feel free to speak your mind.”
Raquel felt a surge of nervousness, her palms slick with sweat, yet she managed to smile at Agnes. However, Agnes noticed the malice in Raquel’s gaze, causing her heart to beat somewhat faster. If she were to tell the truth, there was no doubt that Raquel would seek vengeance upon her. That said, if she chose not to speak up, the opportunity to take Raquel down would simply slip away. It would be much harder to deal with the despicable Raquel in the future.
While Agnes was hesitating, Raquel spoke up.
“Agnes, you seem a bit nervous. I remember that you have some psychiatric medication in your room. How about I go get you some to calm down?”
Agnes’s heart skipped a beat.
“That’s not necessary. I’m quite calm. It’s just that I ran up the stairs too quickly, and I need to catch my breath.”
Deborah expressed her concern.
“Next time, there’s no need to rush over so quickly. Also, try to take fewer psychiatric medications. Every medicine has its side effects. At your age, taking those addictive drugs isn’t good for your health.”
