Chapter 23
“If what happened to Matthew is exposed, the Carters will definitely support you. Those families we work with will have no choice but to choose you!”
Quinn was excited. “Dad, when do you plan to reveal Matthew’s identity?”
Malcolm replied firmly, “We must take advantage of Rachel’s return. We need to organize a gathering, inviting relatives, friends, and business partners. We will expose Matthew’s identity and seize the presidency!”
Quinn was enthusiastic. “All right, let’s do it!”
Just then, a knock sounded. A voice announced, “Ms. Getter is here with her boyfriend.”
Malcolm glanced at Quinn. “Just the person we needed. She delivered herself right to us.”
Matthew examined the antique furnishings in the living room. The furniture was all wood.
Rachel frowned, appearing troubled. Matthew noticed her persistent frown since their arrival, sensing the pressure the Carters were placing on her.
The thought of spending the night together spurred him to feel responsible and supportive. He smiled and comforted her, “Don’t worry. I’m here.”
Rachel frowned even deeper. “You’re just a doctor.”
She said no more. Matthew smiled. “What’s wrong with being a doctor? As long as I’m here, no one can mistreat you!”
Rachel’s worry deepened; Matthew was just a doctor, unable to help her in her family’s power struggle.
Footsteps sounded at the door. Malcolm and Quinn entered the living room.
Rachel stood. “Uncle Malcolm, I apologize for the unexpected visit.”
Matthew also rose. Rachel’s politeness revealed a strained relationship, perhaps worse than strangers. They wouldn’t be so formally polite otherwise.
Matthew gestured for Rachel to sit. “Rachel, you’re here.”
Rachel began to introduce Matthew. “Uncle Malcolm, this is my boyfriend, Main—”
Before she finished, Malcolm coldly interrupted. “That’s enough. You don’t need to introduce him. A nobody like him doesn’t deserve to meet me.”
Matthew’s gaze sharpened. He’d encountered countless influential people; even Fred had begged for his help. Dozens of Khoitwood's elite sought his treatment, treating him with utmost respect. Yet Malcolm, a mere Carter family member, dared to belittle him. He was overestimating himself.
Rachel’s anger flared. Malcolm's insult was an attack on her. She said coldly, “Uncle Malcolm, what do you mean?”
Malcolm looked at Rachel meaningfully. “What do I mean? You know. You’re getting married soon. You’ll no longer be a Carter. It’s time you relinquished the presidency!”
