Listen to this chapter:

At Lambda City airport, Matthew accompanied Rachel to Wealthwave Group. The building was brightly lit, and senior executives were meeting in the conference room, discussing solutions. Tracy was taking minutes.

The conference room door swung open, and Rachel entered, followed by Matthew. Silence fell; all eyes were on Matthew. Rachel sat down, flipping through documents, seemingly oblivious to his presence. Matthew held a briefcase. He'd planned to leave after greeting Rachel, but her concentration deterred him.

Tyler Hill, the sales manager, frowned. "What are you here for?" he asked. Matthew hesitated. He decided against mentioning his relationship with Rachel in a professional setting, fearing he'd be perceived as a freeloader. "I'm a chauffeur," he replied.

Tyler's face darkened. "This is a highly confidential meeting. Even the logistics manager isn't qualified to attend. Do you think you, a chauffeur, can?"

The senior executives stared at Matthew with mocking expressions. Tracy watched him, a slight curl to her lips; she'd always doubted Rachel and Matthew's relationship.

Hearing the commotion, Rachel turned, noticing Matthew. Realizing her oversight, she said, "I forgot about you. Go home now. I'm staying late. Pick me up at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow to take me to the hospital."

Matthew acknowledged with an "oh," set down his briefcase, and left. After he'd gone, Rachel said, "There are four problems. Let's start with minimizing the impact."

Matthew left the office, faintly hearing Rachel's serious discussion. He was merely a driver; Wealthwave Group's problems were none of his concern. He drove home.

Lorraine was asleep, drooling. He chuckled; she was probably dreaming of delicious food. Lillian, seeing him, quickly washed her hands. "Get some rest. I'll make pasta."

Matthew wasn't actually hungry, but he accepted. "Alright, I'm starving. I came back just for your pasta." Lillian smiled, heading to the kitchen. "I've been waiting."

Stanley complained, "It's late, and your mother's making you pasta. Come back earlier next time." Matthew smiled and agreed. Since his business success, he'd given his parents a break, often eating out to avoid burdening Lillian. He'd noticed her deteriorating mental state from inactivity.

So, he made a point of coming home for meals, improving her condition. He understood he needed to make Lillian feel useful, needed, and indispensable.

Stanley poured water. "Tessa came by yesterday."

Matthew, about to drink, set down his glass. "Why?"

Stanley looked puzzled. "She brought gifts and said she wanted to visit Lorraine. She chatted, but seemed to be probing about you."

Matthew was puzzled. "You didn't tell her anything about me, right?"

Stanley shook his head. "No. She seemed preoccupied, but I didn't ask."

Matthew picked up his glass. He wanted nothing to do with Tessa. "Good. Her affairs have nothing to do with me anymore."

The next day, Matthew carried Lorraine. "Let's go. Daddy's taking you to school."

Lorraine kissed his cheek. "Thanks, Dad."

A black car was parked outside. Tessa emerged. Matthew frowned, wondering why she was there. Lorraine clung to him, looking timidly at Tessa.

Tessa approached, smiling. "Taking Lorraine to school? Take my car. I'll give you a ride."

Matthew shook his head. "No need. We'll go ourselves." Tessa's smile faltered, noticing his disdain.
