“Let’s go in, and you’ll find out.”
Before Matthew and Rachel reached the door, they saw Jeffrey exiting the club. Matthew said grimly, “Who would have thought he’d be waiting?”
Rachel calmly replied, “I imagine the club staff informed him of my arrival. The service here is excellent.”
Matthew remained skeptical, but then he saw the doorman speaking to Jeffrey and gesturing towards them. He finally accepted Rachel’s explanation. Someone must have notified Jeffrey earlier, perhaps in the parking lot. He suddenly found the club intriguing.
Jeffrey approached Rachel. “Rachel, my old classmate! You’re finally here. I’ve invited two other friends to join us. It’s great to see you again.”
Rachel politely responded, “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Jeffrey coldly glanced at Matthew, then ignored him, leading Rachel inside. “Let’s go.”
With a blank expression, Matthew followed.
As they reached the entrance, the security guard stopped Matthew. “Sorry, sir, you must be a member or have an invitation.”
Matthew was startled. “What?”
Standing nearby, Jeffrey scoffed before the guard could explain. “We’re at the Opulent Club, not some dive, Matthew. Only influential people are admitted. As a chauffeur, you don’t belong here.”
Matthew considered acquiring a membership, but Rachel produced her card. “I’m a member. I can invite him in.”
The security guard shook his head. “As a guest, you can’t bring in additional people.”
Rachel was surprised. “What’s the difference?”
The security guard explained, “Second-floor members must make an appointment four hours in advance to bring a guest. However, as a guest yourself, you’re only permitted access to Jeffrey’s reserved room. You can’t bring anyone else into the club.”
Rachel was taken aback. She was unaware of this rule and felt troubled.
Jeffrey remarked, “We’re here to talk business, Rachel. The chauffeur doesn’t belong here. Have him wait outside.”
Rachel shook her head. Matthew was more than just her chauffeur; she wouldn’t treat him like ordinary staff.
She produced a bank card and approached the guard. “I’d like to obtain a membership.”
Seeing this, the security guard gestured politely. “This way, please. We’ll handle this in the reception area.”
He then led Rachel to the lobby.
Matthew hadn’t anticipated such complications. He’d lost interest in entering but didn’t stop Rachel from getting a membership.
After Rachel left, Jeffrey approached Matthew with a scornful look. “Don't you see the difference between us? I get in; you stay outside.”
Matthew’s mouth twitched. “Do you think I want to be here? If it weren’t for Rachel, I wouldn’t have bothered.”
Matthew possessed ten billion dollars; the membership fee was insignificant. However, he disliked restrictive rules. Spending money only to be constrained by the club’s regulations had completely disengaged him.
With a disdainful glance, Jeffrey sneered, “Stop playing tough. You're just a chauffeur, a poor nobody. Know your place. Rachel and I are high society. You'll never be part of our world, even living off her.”
Matthew’s expression hardened. He didn’t want to engage Jeffrey, but Jeffrey persisted, constantly seeking to humiliate him.
Watching Jeffrey’s arrogant demeanor, Matthew decided to provoke him. “Making a big deal out of nothing. I don’t need to be in your ‘circle’ to live comfortably off her. It’s a sweet deal, and I love it.”
