Chapter 28

I leaned close to Jared, whispering, "What a coincidence, huh? Just when I was bored, someone steps in to rescue me—and my son." I patted his shoulder condescendingly. "If that guy isn't a saint..." My tone dripped sarcasm.

Turning to Jonas, I smiled brightly. "Son, let's go. School tomorrow, remember?"

Jonas nodded and followed me out. Jared watched us go, his face a mixture of anger and forced calm. He eventually smiled weakly at Yvonne. "Since Mr. Joplin isn't keen on my presence, let's leave."

"Jared, what's gotten into Cole?" Yvonne frowned.

Jared hailed a cab, pulling Yvonne along. I didn't care what happened after that. Relief surged through me. Even the simplest tasks felt joyful.

Jonas, sensing my mood, suggested dinner. At the restaurant, I asked softly, "Jonas, what did you think?"

He put down his spoon. "I felt really happy, Daddy. Seeing those kids smile…it was meaningful."

"Wonderful," I smiled.

My phone buzzed—Yvonne. "What?" I snapped.

"When are you bringing Xavier's toys? He's been asking."

"This weekend. I'll send a list. Let me know if anything's missing."

"Alright…that's all then. Call less often if it's not important. Goodbye."

Back at the office, my secretary announced, "Mr. Lawson is here."

"Again? Send him in."

Jared entered, smiling. "Mr. Joplin, I hope I'm not intruding."

I gestured to a chair. "What brings you here, Mr. Lawson?"

"A proposal," he began, smiling. "I've taken on a charity endorsement and thought we could collaborate. It could really help your project."

I laughed coldly. "Mr. Lawson, my project doesn't need celebrity endorsements. Donate directly if you want to help."

His smile wavered, then returned. "I understand your reservations, but for the children…shouldn't we work together?"

"Mr. Lawson, let's be blunt. There's nothing to collaborate on. You be a star, I'll do my charity work. Let's stay out of each other's way."

He sighed. "I know you have issues with me, but consider the children, especially Xavier. He really wants—"

"Don't use the children as an excuse," I interrupted. "Xavier's with Yvonne. And you don't need to concern yourself with Jonas."

Jared stood. "If that's how you feel…I won't push it. I hope we can be friends someday."

I chuckled. "I'll be waiting."

After he left, exhaustion hit me. My phone rang—Peyton.

"Cole, great news!" he exclaimed.
