Chapter 44

"What are you staring at?" I pulled Lorraine behind me. Her hand trembled slightly under mine.

"Are you two staying together?" Yvonne snapped.

"Yeah, so? What's it to you?" I retorted, weary of her questions. "Mind your own business."

I didn't owe her an explanation. Grabbing Lorraine's hand, I glanced back at Xavier. He clearly disliked me; better he stayed with Yvonne.

My steps grew heavier as we approached the rooms. My room was next to Lorraine's. My heart pounded harder with each step. Should I stop by? Wait for an invitation? My palms were clammy. Jonas's hand trembled in mine.

"Daddy, are you—"

"Jonas, are you hungry?" I cut him off.

"No, Daddy."

"Then let's grab dinner later," I winked. He nodded, ever cooperative.

We were almost there. My teeth were practically grinding. Outside Lorraine's door, my heart threatened to leap from my chest.

"Cole."

"Yeah?" I froze, turning stiffly. Lorraine smiled, amused. "Aren't you coming in?"

"Yes, of course. Definitely." I nodded like an idiot. "I'll just grab my clothes," I blurted, aiming for casual. I had two key cards; one was for Yvonne's room.

"Okay, hurry up."

"I'll be waiting," she said, smiling as she entered.

As the door closed, I exhaled, my heart slowing. It was like falling from a great height onto a soft cushion.

"Daddy, are you okay?" Jonas asked, his sharp eyes noticing my fluster.

"I'm fine," I said. "Just... a little overwhelmed."

"What should we do then?" he asked, tilting his head.

"Don't worry. I'll be fine."

Back in my room, I grabbed pajamas and essentials. I wasn't planning on staying long. I'd check for other rooms tomorrow—preferably far from Yvonne. Jonas sat on the bed, cradling his face.

"What is it?" I asked.

His eyes lit up. "Daddy, how did you know I was going to say something?"

"Because I'm your dad," I replied, pulling him close.

"Do you miss Xavier?" His eyes gave him away. He was too kind to hide his feelings. But Xavier treated him like a toy. I didn't want them together. I couldn't bear the thought of Jonas getting hurt.

"When will they be back?" he asked, thinking of Xavier. He just wanted a playmate. And Xavier, as tricky as he was, knew how to keep Jonas hooked.

"They'll be back soon," I said, though I hoped otherwise. I couldn't tell him the truth.
