Listen to this chapter:

Gilbert scolded, "Get out!"

The next moment, Jason was chased out. Seeing Maeve at the doorway, he looked stern.

"It's good that you heard," he said. "It's only a matter of time before I make Byron divorce you. So you'd better not think you can rest easy with my father backing you."

Maeve's face turned pale, her palms aching from clenching. She thought, Sure enough, other than Gilbert, no one in the McDaniel family approves of my marriage with Byron. Even Byron's father strongly opposes it, so divorce is inevitable. After staying in the bungalow until afternoon, Byron still hadn't returned. Maeve went back alone.

Getting a taxi was difficult, so Gilbert sent a driver. Once in the car, Maeve felt uneasy and took out her phone to distract herself. She received a message from Bonnie: "Maeve, I'm such a poor thing! I slipped in the snow and hurt my butt."

Maeve hurriedly opened the message and saw a photo of Bonnie hospitalized. She thought, Even hospitalized, she didn't forget her hug pillow. This girl is reallyโ€ฆ Maeve shook her head, then asked the driver to go to First Hospital.

Bonnie was lying prone on a hospital bed; a doctor in a white coat spoke to her. Maeve pushed open the door and saw Ray.

"Dr. George," she said.

Ray smiled playfully. "Ms. Reese? What a coincidence, you're here too."

Maeve didn't understand his words' deeper meaning. She went to Bonnie and asked, "How's my friend's injury? Is it serious?"

Ray glanced at Bonnie and nodded. "You should persuade her. Her tailbone is dislocated and needs manual adjustment. Prolonged delay will worsen it." Bonnie shouted in grief and indignation, "No! I'm a married woman! I can't let a strange man touch my butt!"

It was tragic, but Maeve almost laughed. Ray looked surprised. "You're married?"

Bonnie hugged her body pillow, which had a printed image of a person, and said nervously, "Yes. Can I skip the adjustment?"

Interest flashed in Ray's attractive eyes. "No, unless you want to lie here forever." Bonnie's expression went blank.

Maeve hurriedly said, "Dr. George, let me persuade her. It won't take long, right?"

Ray nodded. "Alright. I'll go out now."

After he left, Maeve laughed. Bonnie looked aggrieved. "I'm in this state, and you're laughing? Are we still friends?"

"Of course," Maeve smiled helplessly. "Doctors see no gender in patients. Stubbornness only hurts you." She thought, The injury's location is tricky. Bonnie's young and has never had a boyfriend; this is a psychological hurdle. But if she doesn't get treatment, her injury won't heal! Maeve decided to add pressure. "And think about it, Dr. George is quite handsome. If you don't let him do it, the hospital might send a middle-aged guyโ€ฆ"

"No, no, no!" Bonnie was terrified. "I-I'll do it! Maeve, help me tell the doctor. I'm scaredโ€ฆ" Maeve smiled. "Don't be scared. I know Dr. George; he's skilled."

"Please don't leave. Stay with me."

"Okay, okay. Don't worry."

Maeve informed Ray, "Dr. George, Bonnie agreed."

"Not a problem, Mrs. McDaniel," Ray smiled. "Since she's your friend, I'll do my best."

"Mrs. McDaniel" made Maeve blush. She tried to deny it. "You're mistaken. Mr. McDaniel and I are notโ€ฆ"

"Mrs. McDaniel, don't hide it. Byron told us everything the other day. He even got drunk because you brought up the divorce."

Ray thought, With Byron's tolerance, few get him drunk unless he wants to be. Yet, he's been drunk twice because of Maeve. I doubt he married her just to appease his grandfather.

Maeve was incredulous. He got drunk because I brought up divorce? He used to talk about it!

Enjoying the drama, Ray said, "By the way, Mrs. McDaniel, Byron's on this floor. Why don't you see him?"

"What's wrong with him? Is he sick?" Maeve was nervous.

Ray shrugged meaningfully. "He's not sick, but he's bothered by an incurable problem." (And an experienced angelic bitch, he added mentally.)

Anxious, Maeve went to look for Byron. She saw Byron and Karen near a ward. Karen, seeing Maeve, kissed Byron's face. Byron frowned and pushed her away, but she left a red mark on his collar. She pretended to cry and clung to him.

"Byron, I'm scaredโ€ฆ"

Maeve froze. Her face turned pale.

"If you're scared, hug the doctor," Byron said. He pushed Karen away. He saw Maeve and paused.

Before he could speak, Maeve turned and walked away. Karen clung to his sleeve. "Byron, don't leave me! I'm afraid my dad willโ€ฆ"

"Let go," Byron said, hostility flashing in his eyes.

Karen was frightened. She saw him head towards Maeve and bit her lip. He snapped at me for Maeve!

Maeve calmly walked toward Bonnie's ward. Byron grabbed her arm.

"Maeve, it's not what you think," he said seriously. "Don't overthink."

"I'm not," Maeve said tensely, smiling indifferently. "It's just a thing between childhood friends. You don't have to explain."
