The Queen was very busy; Maeve only saw her for fittings. Loren, on the other hand, frequently visited for meals or to bring Theo high-tech toys. Even with her other identity, Maeve never went out of her way to please them, offering only basic human decency.

After a brief chat, Karina returned to work. Just then, Theo spotted Maeve. His eyes lit up, and he rushed to her.

โ€œMommy! I missed you so much!โ€

Maeve chuckled, unsure whether to laugh or cry. โ€œYouโ€™ve only been gone less than an hour. Did you miss me that much?โ€

Theodore shook his head. โ€œAbsence makes the heart grow fonder, Mommy! Especially mine!โ€

โ€œYou and your silly ideas,โ€ Maeve said, lifting him and tapping his nose. โ€œIf you missed me so much, why didnโ€™t you stay?โ€

โ€œHehe, I was gathering information!โ€ Theo patted a notebook.

Maeve looked at it curiously. โ€œWhatโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œMommyโ€™s court uniform research report!โ€ Theo replied.

Maeve hadnโ€™t expected Theo to be researching in the palace.

โ€œThank you, Theo,โ€ she said, kissing his cheek. โ€œYouโ€™ve really helped me.โ€

Theo blushed, wringing his hands. โ€œNot really, just a little.โ€

Maeve carried him to the palace car and they drove home. As she opened the door, she asked, โ€œHave you finished your homework? Donโ€™t wait for Jaylen to check; heโ€™ll give you extra if he does.โ€

Theodore wrinkled his nose. โ€œMommy, letโ€™s lock the door tonight and keep Jaylen out!โ€

โ€œWho are you keeping out?โ€ a disgruntled voice came from the living room.

Maeve was startled. Before she could react, Theo was lifted from her arms. The man, dressed in gray traditional clothing, looked more mature and gentler than before.

โ€œJaylen?โ€ Maeve was surprised. โ€œWerenโ€™t you supposed to return in two days? Did you finish?โ€

Jaylen nodded, weighing Theo. โ€œNo wonder your mother calls you Theo. Youโ€™re getting chubbier. Eat less.โ€

Theo puffed his cheeks. โ€œIโ€™m a child! Iโ€™ll be thin as a lightning bolt when I grow up!โ€

โ€œA lightning bolt sixteen feet in diameter?โ€ Jaylen retorted.

Theo grabbed Jaylenโ€™s face. โ€œJaylen, if you keep talking like that, youโ€™ll never get married!โ€

Jaylen subconsciously looked at Maeve, who smiled gently. He snorted. โ€œChildren should drink more milk and worry less. And youโ€™re to call me Godfather, not Jaylen.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to!โ€ Theo refused. โ€œOnce a brother, always a brother! Donโ€™t change our seniority just because Iโ€™m younger!โ€

Jaylen was speechless. Maeve laughed until she bent over.

โ€œYouโ€™re laughing?โ€ Jaylenโ€™s face fell.

โ€œSorry, I couldnโ€™t help it,โ€ Maeve gasped. โ€œYou should have just taken Theo as a student. Why go through all that?โ€ She alluded to the fact that he had lost a student to his master. Theo was now the youngest disciple of Jaylen's master. Jaylen had been upset for a long time and hadn't returned to the sect.

Theo patted Jaylenโ€™s shoulder. โ€œJaylen, thatโ€™s what we call wasted effort.โ€

โ€œYou brat,โ€ Jaylen said, leading him to the study. โ€œIโ€™m testing your progress. Did you slack off?โ€

Theodore whined. Maeve shook her head, unsure who was more childish, and went to the kitchen.

Soon, Jaylen joined her, helping with vegetables. His voice was low. โ€œI heard from Loren you plan to go back. Arenโ€™t you afraid of seeing him?โ€

Maeve paused, her chopping slowing.

โ€œOf course, Iโ€™m afraid,โ€ she said gently. โ€œBut thereโ€™s no point in running anymore. Theoโ€™s grown up. I want toโ€ฆ go back and bury the childโ€™s body.โ€

For four years, Maeve hadnโ€™t forgotten her child's death. It was a deep scar, causing her pain even with the slightest touch. Jaylen knew this; heโ€™d heard her crying in her sleep. This unresolved grief prevented her from moving on.

Jaylen looked at her. โ€œWhen are you going?โ€

โ€œThe day after tomorrow,โ€ Maeve replied.

โ€œThat soon?โ€

Maeve nodded. โ€œA fashion show in Kleymond; Iโ€™m a judge. A short holiday.โ€

Jaylen raised an eyebrow. โ€œI forgot MR is internationally renowned. If you werenโ€™t hiding in the palace, youโ€™d be drowning in invitations.โ€

โ€œNothing compared to Dr. Chatterlyโ€™s popularity. You get approached daily,โ€ she teased.

After some playful banter, Jaylen hesitated. โ€œWhat about him? What are your plans?โ€

Silence fell. After a long moment, Maeve said calmly, โ€œI donโ€™t care about him anymore. Heโ€™s a stranger.โ€

Jaylen smiled. โ€œThatโ€™s good. I was worried youโ€™d be sad. Thereโ€™s something I havenโ€™t told you.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThe year you left, he had a child with Lynn.โ€

Maeveโ€™s grip tightened on the knife; she cut her finger. Jaylen quickly rinsed the wound.

โ€œHow did you cut yourself? What are you thinking?โ€

Maeve smiled casually. โ€œThe knife was slippery. I even cut my glove last time.โ€

Jaylen bandaged her finger and sent her to check on Theo.

โ€œGo see if Theoโ€™s slacking. Leave this to me.โ€

Maeve walked to the study, her forced smile fading. She looked at the bandage, a frown creasing her brow.

โ€œStrange. Itโ€™s just a small wound, why does it feel so uncomfortable?โ€ she wondered.

Unseen by Maeve, Theo dashed back to the study, locking the door. He held his chin thoughtfully. โ€œSo Mommy had another child? My olderโ€ฆ or younger twin?โ€

Maeve glared toward the living room, then deliberately asked Theo, โ€œIf Iโ€™m the baby, what are you?โ€

Joy, her young daughter, looked distressed, then her eyes lit up. โ€œIโ€™m Mommy and Daddyโ€™s silly child!โ€

Maeve, charmed by her daughterโ€™s seriousness, nuzzled her cheek. โ€œDonโ€™t listen to your daddy. Youโ€™re our baby.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Joy insisted. โ€œOnly Mama is his baby.โ€

Maeve blushed, wondering when her husband would stop treating her like a child. After conveying her message, Joy went to watch cartoons.

Maeve thought that would be the end of it, but the next day at kindergarten, parents and teachers looked at her with ridicule. The group chat revealed everything. Joy had announced to the class: "My Daddy is so clingy! He clings to Mommy every day! Can't he look for his own Mommy? Also, why does Mommy get so angry when Daddy calls her his baby?"

The revelation that the CEO of the McDaniel Group was so clingy to his wife and called her "baby" was astonishing. Maeve's embarrassment was immense. Byron McDaniel kicked her calf. "Byron McDaniel, look what you've done!"
