The Queen was very busy; Maeve only saw her for fittings. Loren, on the other hand, frequently visited for meals or to bring Theo high-tech toys. Even with her other identity, Maeve never went out of her way to please them, offering only basic human decency.
After a brief chat, Karina returned to work. Just then, Theo spotted Maeve. His eyes lit up, and he rushed to her.
โMommy! I missed you so much!โ
Maeve chuckled, unsure whether to laugh or cry. โYouโve only been gone less than an hour. Did you miss me that much?โ
Theodore shook his head. โAbsence makes the heart grow fonder, Mommy! Especially mine!โ
โYou and your silly ideas,โ Maeve said, lifting him and tapping his nose. โIf you missed me so much, why didnโt you stay?โ
โHehe, I was gathering information!โ Theo patted a notebook.
Maeve looked at it curiously. โWhatโs this?โ
โMommyโs court uniform research report!โ Theo replied.
Maeve hadnโt expected Theo to be researching in the palace.
โThank you, Theo,โ she said, kissing his cheek. โYouโve really helped me.โ
Theo blushed, wringing his hands. โNot really, just a little.โ
Maeve carried him to the palace car and they drove home. As she opened the door, she asked, โHave you finished your homework? Donโt wait for Jaylen to check; heโll give you extra if he does.โ
Theodore wrinkled his nose. โMommy, letโs lock the door tonight and keep Jaylen out!โ
โWho are you keeping out?โ a disgruntled voice came from the living room.
Maeve was startled. Before she could react, Theo was lifted from her arms. The man, dressed in gray traditional clothing, looked more mature and gentler than before.
โJaylen?โ Maeve was surprised. โWerenโt you supposed to return in two days? Did you finish?โ
Jaylen nodded, weighing Theo. โNo wonder your mother calls you Theo. Youโre getting chubbier. Eat less.โ
Theo puffed his cheeks. โIโm a child! Iโll be thin as a lightning bolt when I grow up!โ
โA lightning bolt sixteen feet in diameter?โ Jaylen retorted.
Theo grabbed Jaylenโs face. โJaylen, if you keep talking like that, youโll never get married!โ
Jaylen subconsciously looked at Maeve, who smiled gently. He snorted. โChildren should drink more milk and worry less. And youโre to call me Godfather, not Jaylen.โ
โI donโt want to!โ Theo refused. โOnce a brother, always a brother! Donโt change our seniority just because Iโm younger!โ
Jaylen was speechless. Maeve laughed until she bent over.
โYouโre laughing?โ Jaylenโs face fell.
โSorry, I couldnโt help it,โ Maeve gasped. โYou should have just taken Theo as a student. Why go through all that?โ She alluded to the fact that he had lost a student to his master. Theo was now the youngest disciple of Jaylen's master. Jaylen had been upset for a long time and hadn't returned to the sect.
Theo patted Jaylenโs shoulder. โJaylen, thatโs what we call wasted effort.โ
โYou brat,โ Jaylen said, leading him to the study. โIโm testing your progress. Did you slack off?โ
Theodore whined. Maeve shook her head, unsure who was more childish, and went to the kitchen.
Soon, Jaylen joined her, helping with vegetables. His voice was low. โI heard from Loren you plan to go back. Arenโt you afraid of seeing him?โ
Maeve paused, her chopping slowing.
โOf course, Iโm afraid,โ she said gently. โBut thereโs no point in running anymore. Theoโs grown up. I want toโฆ go back and bury the childโs body.โ
For four years, Maeve hadnโt forgotten her child's death. It was a deep scar, causing her pain even with the slightest touch. Jaylen knew this; heโd heard her crying in her sleep. This unresolved grief prevented her from moving on.
Jaylen looked at her. โWhen are you going?โ
โThe day after tomorrow,โ Maeve replied.
โThat soon?โ
Maeve nodded. โA fashion show in Kleymond; Iโm a judge. A short holiday.โ
Jaylen raised an eyebrow. โI forgot MR is internationally renowned. If you werenโt hiding in the palace, youโd be drowning in invitations.โ
โNothing compared to Dr. Chatterlyโs popularity. You get approached daily,โ she teased.
After some playful banter, Jaylen hesitated. โWhat about him? What are your plans?โ
Silence fell. After a long moment, Maeve said calmly, โI donโt care about him anymore. Heโs a stranger.โ
Jaylen smiled. โThatโs good. I was worried youโd be sad. Thereโs something I havenโt told you.โ
โWhat?โ
โThe year you left, he had a child with Lynn.โ
Maeveโs grip tightened on the knife; she cut her finger. Jaylen quickly rinsed the wound.
โHow did you cut yourself? What are you thinking?โ
Maeve smiled casually. โThe knife was slippery. I even cut my glove last time.โ
Jaylen bandaged her finger and sent her to check on Theo.
โGo see if Theoโs slacking. Leave this to me.โ
Maeve walked to the study, her forced smile fading. She looked at the bandage, a frown creasing her brow.
โStrange. Itโs just a small wound, why does it feel so uncomfortable?โ she wondered.
Unseen by Maeve, Theo dashed back to the study, locking the door. He held his chin thoughtfully. โSo Mommy had another child? My olderโฆ or younger twin?โ
Maeve glared toward the living room, then deliberately asked Theo, โIf Iโm the baby, what are you?โ
Joy, her young daughter, looked distressed, then her eyes lit up. โIโm Mommy and Daddyโs silly child!โ
Maeve, charmed by her daughterโs seriousness, nuzzled her cheek. โDonโt listen to your daddy. Youโre our baby.โ
โNo!โ Joy insisted. โOnly Mama is his baby.โ
Maeve blushed, wondering when her husband would stop treating her like a child. After conveying her message, Joy went to watch cartoons.
Maeve thought that would be the end of it, but the next day at kindergarten, parents and teachers looked at her with ridicule. The group chat revealed everything. Joy had announced to the class: "My Daddy is so clingy! He clings to Mommy every day! Can't he look for his own Mommy? Also, why does Mommy get so angry when Daddy calls her his baby?"
The revelation that the CEO of the McDaniel Group was so clingy to his wife and called her "baby" was astonishing. Maeve's embarrassment was immense. Byron McDaniel kicked her calf. "Byron McDaniel, look what you've done!"
