9:05 FTI,

โ€œSince you donโ€™t understand, youโ€™ll need to figure it out on your own. If I break everything down and hand it to you, whose life are you really living, yours?โ€ Byron asked.

Willโ€™s flushed face went blank, then shifted to shock and shame. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Dad.โ€

Will felt embarrassed to need such a basic reminder from his father. He felt he had failed his dad, his mom, and the sacred scriptures. Then it struck him.

Will sighed. โ€œDad, are you avoiding the question on purpose?โ€

Byron didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œWould I do that?โ€

Will thought for a moment. โ€œI get it. Dad, youโ€™re worried that Mom would feel sad if she knew the truth. Thatโ€™s why youโ€™re keeping it quiet.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t she already know?โ€

โ€œOf course not,โ€ Will replied, frowning. โ€œIf she did, why would she tell us not to talk about the car accident in front of you? Sheโ€™s afraid itโ€™ll upset you.โ€

Byronโ€™s expression wavered slightly. โ€œYou didnโ€™t tell her?โ€

โ€œDad, you said sheโ€™d definitely cry if she knew, so of course we didnโ€™t tell her,โ€ Will said.

Byron sat silently, his face unreadable, but his clenched fingers showed his unease. So, Maeve didnโ€™t know the truth about his blindness. Heโ€™d misread her intentions. Her care for him wasnโ€™t out of pity or guilt. It had to be something else. Just then, the bathroom door opened, and Maeveโ€™s amused voice drifted into the room.

โ€œAlright, Theo. If you wash any longer, youโ€™ll turn into SpongeBob SquarePants. Out you go.โ€

She guided the freshly scrubbed Theo out, helping him with his nightcap.

Theo squirmed and protested, โ€œPromise youโ€™ll help me wash up again tomorrow!โ€

โ€œFine. I promise. Now hurry to bed, or Will wonโ€™t wait for you.โ€

Theo darted to Willโ€™s bed, climbed up, and threw himself on his brother. โ€œSmell me! I smell amazing!โ€

Will, squished under his brother, groaned. โ€œYes, you smell amazing and heavy! Now, can you get off me?โ€

Hearing the two playing around, Byronโ€™s lips curved slightly. Maybe having a little brother wasnโ€™t a bad thing for Will, Byron thought.

Will glanced over at the table. โ€œMom, your phoneโ€™s ringing. It says Bonnie is calling.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s my godmother,โ€ Theo piped up proudly. โ€œYou havenโ€™t met her, Will. Sheโ€™s great. She bought me so many treats!โ€

โ€œThe last partโ€™s the important part,โ€ Will mused.

Maeve took the phone, patting Willโ€™s head. โ€œJust a bit warm. No fever.โ€ Then, she picked up the call.

โ€œMaeve! You wonโ€™t believe this. Something amazingโ€™s happening!โ€ Bonnieโ€™s lively voice burst through the phone.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Maeve asked, stepping into the bathroom for some quiet.

โ€œMy relatives are so tired of pushing me to get married, theyโ€™re hosting a banquet tomorrow with all the singles in the circle. Everyone there will be family-approved and gorgeous!โ€ Bonnie practically squealed. โ€œIsnโ€™t this a prime matchmaking event? So many handsome guys!โ€

Maeve laughed. โ€œSounds like a blind date to me.โ€

Hearing โ€œblind date,โ€ both kids and Byron looked over sharply.

โ€˜Mommy is going on a blind date?โ€™ the kids thought.

Byronโ€™s brow furrowed as irritation began radiating from him. He stood, feeling his way to the bathroom, where Maeve was still listening to Bonnieโ€™s plans.

โ€œI already know what Iโ€™ll wear tomorrow!โ€ Bonnie said with excitement. โ€œThis time, Iโ€™m going after the most handsome guy there.โ€

It was hard to believe that the girl speaking so boldly was an introvert not many years ago.

Maeve hesitated. โ€œBonnie, Iโ€™m not sure I can make it.โ€

โ€œYou have Mr. McDaniel. Of course I wonโ€™t set you up with anyone. I just want you as my wingwoman. Please, I need you there with me!โ€ Bonnie pleaded.

โ€œItโ€™s not because of Byron. I was actually sick recently, and hospitalized for a bit because of a rare variant. Iโ€™m just getting better,โ€ Maeve said.

There was silence for a few seconds, then Bonnieโ€™s voice cracked with emotion.

Bonnie exclaimed, โ€œMaeve! How could you not tell me you were in the hospital? And here I was, talking about blind dates!โ€

Maeve laughed gently. โ€œI didnโ€™t want to worry you. I planned to tell you after I was discharged.โ€

She stopped, reflecting. She hadnโ€™t told Bonnie to avoid worrying her.

โ€˜Maybe Byron is keeping things from me for the same reason,โ€™ Maeve thought. Maeve sneered at her naive self in the mirror. โ€˜But if thatโ€™s true, then why did he push me away so forcefully?โ€™

โ€œI donโ€™t care!โ€ Bonnie protested. โ€œNext time, tell me right away. Iโ€™m coming to visit tomorrow, and Iโ€™m bringing a rose my gardener cultivated just for you.โ€

Maeveโ€™s heart warmed. She was grateful to have such a caring friend.

โ€œActually, Iโ€™ll be discharged in a few days. We can celebrate then, whether itโ€™s a blind date or a night out,โ€ Maeve said.

โ€œYou said it! Iโ€™m holding you to it!โ€

โ€œDeal.โ€

Maeve smiled, but her phone had barely disconnected when there was a knock on the bathroom door. She opened it and was met with Byronโ€™s towering frame, blocking the way. Startled, she said, โ€œExcuse me. I was just about to leave.โ€

Byron stepped aside silently.

As Maeve passed through, Byron grabbed her arm and bent close, his imposing presence filling the small space despite the gauze over his eyes.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re going on a blind date?โ€ Byronโ€™s deep voice was unreadable, masking any trace of emotion.
