9:05 FTI,
โSince you donโt understand, youโll need to figure it out on your own. If I break everything down and hand it to you, whose life are you really living, yours?โ Byron asked.
Willโs flushed face went blank, then shifted to shock and shame. โIโm sorry, Dad.โ
Will felt embarrassed to need such a basic reminder from his father. He felt he had failed his dad, his mom, and the sacred scriptures. Then it struck him.
Will sighed. โDad, are you avoiding the question on purpose?โ
Byron didnโt flinch. โWould I do that?โ
Will thought for a moment. โI get it. Dad, youโre worried that Mom would feel sad if she knew the truth. Thatโs why youโre keeping it quiet.โ
โDoesnโt she already know?โ
โOf course not,โ Will replied, frowning. โIf she did, why would she tell us not to talk about the car accident in front of you? Sheโs afraid itโll upset you.โ
Byronโs expression wavered slightly. โYou didnโt tell her?โ
โDad, you said sheโd definitely cry if she knew, so of course we didnโt tell her,โ Will said.
Byron sat silently, his face unreadable, but his clenched fingers showed his unease. So, Maeve didnโt know the truth about his blindness. Heโd misread her intentions. Her care for him wasnโt out of pity or guilt. It had to be something else. Just then, the bathroom door opened, and Maeveโs amused voice drifted into the room.
โAlright, Theo. If you wash any longer, youโll turn into SpongeBob SquarePants. Out you go.โ
She guided the freshly scrubbed Theo out, helping him with his nightcap.
Theo squirmed and protested, โPromise youโll help me wash up again tomorrow!โ
โFine. I promise. Now hurry to bed, or Will wonโt wait for you.โ
Theo darted to Willโs bed, climbed up, and threw himself on his brother. โSmell me! I smell amazing!โ
Will, squished under his brother, groaned. โYes, you smell amazing and heavy! Now, can you get off me?โ
Hearing the two playing around, Byronโs lips curved slightly. Maybe having a little brother wasnโt a bad thing for Will, Byron thought.
Will glanced over at the table. โMom, your phoneโs ringing. It says Bonnie is calling.โ
โSheโs my godmother,โ Theo piped up proudly. โYou havenโt met her, Will. Sheโs great. She bought me so many treats!โ
โThe last partโs the important part,โ Will mused.
Maeve took the phone, patting Willโs head. โJust a bit warm. No fever.โ Then, she picked up the call.
โMaeve! You wonโt believe this. Something amazingโs happening!โ Bonnieโs lively voice burst through the phone.
โWhatโs going on?โ Maeve asked, stepping into the bathroom for some quiet.
โMy relatives are so tired of pushing me to get married, theyโre hosting a banquet tomorrow with all the singles in the circle. Everyone there will be family-approved and gorgeous!โ Bonnie practically squealed. โIsnโt this a prime matchmaking event? So many handsome guys!โ
Maeve laughed. โSounds like a blind date to me.โ
Hearing โblind date,โ both kids and Byron looked over sharply.
โMommy is going on a blind date?โ the kids thought.
Byronโs brow furrowed as irritation began radiating from him. He stood, feeling his way to the bathroom, where Maeve was still listening to Bonnieโs plans.
โI already know what Iโll wear tomorrow!โ Bonnie said with excitement. โThis time, Iโm going after the most handsome guy there.โ
It was hard to believe that the girl speaking so boldly was an introvert not many years ago.
Maeve hesitated. โBonnie, Iโm not sure I can make it.โ
โYou have Mr. McDaniel. Of course I wonโt set you up with anyone. I just want you as my wingwoman. Please, I need you there with me!โ Bonnie pleaded.
โItโs not because of Byron. I was actually sick recently, and hospitalized for a bit because of a rare variant. Iโm just getting better,โ Maeve said.
There was silence for a few seconds, then Bonnieโs voice cracked with emotion.
Bonnie exclaimed, โMaeve! How could you not tell me you were in the hospital? And here I was, talking about blind dates!โ
Maeve laughed gently. โI didnโt want to worry you. I planned to tell you after I was discharged.โ
She stopped, reflecting. She hadnโt told Bonnie to avoid worrying her.
โMaybe Byron is keeping things from me for the same reason,โ Maeve thought. Maeve sneered at her naive self in the mirror. โBut if thatโs true, then why did he push me away so forcefully?โ
โI donโt care!โ Bonnie protested. โNext time, tell me right away. Iโm coming to visit tomorrow, and Iโm bringing a rose my gardener cultivated just for you.โ
Maeveโs heart warmed. She was grateful to have such a caring friend.
โActually, Iโll be discharged in a few days. We can celebrate then, whether itโs a blind date or a night out,โ Maeve said.
โYou said it! Iโm holding you to it!โ
โDeal.โ
Maeve smiled, but her phone had barely disconnected when there was a knock on the bathroom door. She opened it and was met with Byronโs towering frame, blocking the way. Startled, she said, โExcuse me. I was just about to leave.โ
Byron stepped aside silently.
As Maeve passed through, Byron grabbed her arm and bent close, his imposing presence filling the small space despite the gauze over his eyes.
โSo, youโre going on a blind date?โ Byronโs deep voice was unreadable, masking any trace of emotion.
