Chapter 396

However, this was unimportant. Islaton Private International Kindergarten solemnly announced that the selection competition would be held again. This time, no injustice would be tolerated. "Ah!" Maeve happily hugged the two children beside her. "Babes! Did you see that? There's a new competition. Mommy has another chance!"

Seeing Maeve's happiness, the two little ones snuggled into her arms, equally delighted.

"Mommy will definitely win this time! Then, we can eat something delicious!" Theo sucked on his lower lip.

Will's dream was simpler. "Mom, I've been sitting on my yoga mat for a long time. Can you change it for me?"

Maeve burst into laughter. "The prize money hasn't even entered our pockets yet, and you're already thinking about what to buy with it?" They were even more confident than she was.

Theo shook his head. "I'm not confident in Mommy. I'm just trusting my intuition. I have a feeling that Mommy will definitely win this time!" With that, he cheered Maeve up while subtly complimenting himself.

Maeve poked his bulging stomach. "Will, did you let Theo secretly eat snacks again? Why does he seem a little rounder?"

Will felt guilty. "Mom, Theo is still growing."

Maeve picked up Theo's short legs. "He's not growing. He's nourishing his flesh and waiting to be made into soup."

Actually, he was just a little chubby, not fat. However, if Maeve didn't exaggerate, he wouldn't control his appetite. Afternoon tea every three days and an extra meal every two days—she didn't know how she'd birthed such a greedy cat.

Theo squirmed unhappily. "Other people's cooking isn't good. I'm not willing to be made into soup for them. It's a waste of ingredients! Mommy and Will's soup would be delicious!" Maeve was speechless.

Will agreed. "This glutton is hopeless."

Feeling exhausted, Maeve handed Theo to Will for some "ideological education." Seeing the clock nearing seven o'clock, she said, "Will, call your dad and ask if he's coming for dinner."

"Mom, Dad's follow-up results weren't good. He's being hospitalized tonight," Will said worriedly. "He said he'll be discharged tomorrow at the latest and told us not to visit."

Maeve worried. "After dinner, Mom will go see him. You guys have school tomorrow; you can't stay up late."

"Alright, Mom. We're here. Don't worry," Will replied obediently.

Chapter 396

After dinner, Maeve drove to First Hospital.

When the elevator reached the top floor, Maeve walked towards Byron's ward. Unexpectedly, she saw Dr. Malvis walking out. "Dr. Malvis?"

"Ms. Reese." Serena glanced at the thermos in Maeve's hand. A person of Mr. McDaniel's status would have top-notch food. Why would he be interested in hers? she mocked inwardly.

Serena smiled amiably. "Ms. Reese, are you here to see Mr. McDaniel? If I'd known, I wouldn't have chatted with him so long. He just fell asleep from exhaustion."

Maeve sighed in relief. "From what you said, he seems fine. I'm relieved."

Serena was speechless. Can this woman understand human language?

Serena tried again. "Ms. Reese, are you usually very busy?"

"I am. What's wrong?"

"Nothing. It's just... Mr. McDaniel is sick and has no one to care for him. It's quite unpleasant." Serena smiled insincerely. "I thought that as his girlfriend, you should be aware of this. I didn't expect you to only appear now. You must be very busy."

Her words were clearly mocking Maeve.

Others might have understood, but Maeve, viewing Serena through the filter of Will's doctor and friend, didn't grasp the subtext. She was too busy to think otherwise.

Maeve complained, "Isn't this because I was too idle before? Now, I have to pay double to make up for it. I wish I could split myself in half, but it's still not enough. Dr. Malvis, you're considerate. You noticed I'm busy. I'll remember your words. I won't neglect my own body. I plan to sleep longer here instead of driving home."

Serena was speechless. Damn it, is this woman crazy? My sarcasm is blatant, yet she doesn't understand!

It felt like punching cotton. Furious, Serena left.

Maeve sighed. It was rare to see such a considerate girl.

She entered the ward quietly, finding Byron awake, leaning against the headboard, deep in thought.

"Did I wake you?" Maeve felt awkward.

Hearing her, Byron sat up. "I wasn't asleep. Why did you come? I told Will you didn't need to."

"I ran into Dr. Malvis. She said you'd just fallen asleep. I wanted to leave the soup I made for you," Maeve said casually.

Byron frowned. "She came because I bought some rare herbs from her. I told the bodyguards to get them, but she insisted on delivering them herself. She stayed less than five minutes." He didn't want to relive the past because of someone's nonsense.

Maeve nodded. "I see. Dr. Malvis is good. She's considerate and enthusiastic."

Byron found this unbelievable. "Why do you think she's good?"

With Maeve's usual quick-wittedness, she should have noticed something strange about Serena, Byron thought.

"She's Will's doctor and friend. Would Will be friends with her if she wasn't nice?" Maeve had unconditional trust in her children. "And when I came in, Dr. Malvis kindly reminded me…" Without his usual filter, Byron keenly sensed Serena's hidden meaning.
