Chapter 407
When Maeve left the police station, she expected to see Byron, not Mr. Richard.
"It's great you're fine. I'm glad I can still help," Warren said with relief.
"So you helped me too?" Maeve exclaimed, recovering from her surprise. "Thank you. I don't know how to thank you."
The bureau chief had explained that the case's swift resolution was partly due to Byron and partly to an anonymous benefactor. The director didn't reveal the benefactor's identity.
"Unexpectedly, it was Mr. Richard," Maeve thought.
Warren patted her shoulder, smiling gently. "It's good you're okay. You don't need to be so polite. Actually, I wanted to discuss the online slander. Those people are attacking you because of your father's record, so I want to adopt you. With my reputation, I can mitigate the negative impact. Are you willing to be my daughter?"
Maeve was stunned. Quickly shaking her head, she refused. "Mr. Richard, I'm grateful for your kindness, but there's no need to ruin your reputation for me." It wouldn't be wise to involve him.
Warren looked at her firmly. "This wasn't a whim. You suit my taste, and I'm willing to adopt you. Please don't rush into a decision. Think about it carefully." Maeve, feeling uncomfortable, agreed to consider his offer.
Seeing a black Spyker nearby, she said goodbye to Warren and hurried over.
Upon entering the car and seeing only her children, disappointment flickered across Maeve's face, quickly suppressed.
"Mommy, are you hurt? Did they bully you?" Theo's face was puffed with anger. He examined his mother anxiously.
Will, standing on the seat, massaged Maeve's shoulders. "We're sorry we were late and made you suffer."
Maeve hugged them, taking a deep breath. "It's alright. The Erancian police were reckless, but Uncle Tom and Uncle Loren handled it."
The perpetrators had clearly overstepped boundaries, using her to target Henry. Tom and Loren suspected someone was orchestrating this.
Maeve chose not to worry the children with the details of the targeted attack.
"By the way, how are Byron's eyes?" Maeve asked. Before her detention, Archer mentioned Theo's treatment.
"Of course they're better! With Will and me, nothing's impossible!" Theo puffed out his chest smugly. "Daddy's sight will be back in two days!"
Their preparations had been thorough, even sacrificing sleep for precious medicinal ingredients. They wouldn't settle for anything less than a complete cure.
Will smiled. "Mommy, Daddy wasn't awake yet. He didn't mean to miss picking you up." He worried his mother would be upset.
Compared to Byron's recovery, everything else paled.
"My baby is amazing! The doctors couldn't do it, but you did!" Maeve hugged them, nuzzling their faces. "Awesome!"
The children blushed, blinking shyly.
"Mommy, you're the best!" Theo kissed Maeve. "Because we're your children! Two of them!"
"That's right," Will agreed.
Maeve's gloom lifted. "I need to reward you. What do you want?"
"Mommy, I want McDonald's twice a week!" Theo pleaded.
"I want a new yoga mat," Will added.
Their wishes were simple. Maeve, expecting more expensive requests, planned to use her $100,000 bonus.
'Pretty good,' Maeve thought, deciding, "When your father recovers, we'll have a picnic."
The children's eyes lit up, nodding eagerly. Neither had ever been on a picnic. Maeve was happy to see their excitement.
Then she remembered her conflict with Byron; he might not readily agree.
Back at the hospital, Byron was awake. Seeing others in the ward, Maeve was surprised.
"Ms. Reese," Serena greeted her. "Mr. McDaniel's sight has been restored by my father."
Maeve and the children were stunned. Byron's eyes were still bandaged. He said calmly, "Is that so?"
Mr. Malvis said kindly, "I rarely travel, but Serena persuaded me. I'm leaving tomorrow. Mr. McDaniel, I leave my daughter in your care." Serena smiled shyly.
Maeve frowned. "You're mistaken. He cured Byron. What's your involvement?"
Serena looked at Maeve and then at Theo. "Ms. Reese, are you saying this child cured Mr. McDaniel?"
"Yes," Theo puffed his cheeks. "And you're stealing our credit! That's unfair!"
