Chapter 506
Will was deep in thought. Theoโs lips tightened. โWhat if I go too far?โ
Byron rubbed their heads. โIโve got your backs. Donโt worry about mistakes, or Mom finding out. As long as you donโt cause trouble, sheโll always support you.โ
Their eyes welled up. They knew their motherโs unwavering love, but feared disappointing her. They craved her approval, wanting only to show their best selves.
Byron saw their apprehension. โWhy do you think your mother and I are together?โ
Theo mumbled, โYou forced Mom, used her weaknessesโฆ threatened her. Otherwise, youโd attack her friends, imprison herโฆโ
Byronโs temples throbbed. โWatch less TV.โ He thought, What kind of monster am I in their imaginations?
Will pondered. โDad, is Mom aware of yourโฆ true side?โ
Byron smiled, stroking Willโs hair. โYes, she knew from the start. Donโt treat her as fragile. Even at your worst, youโre her cutest, kindest babies. Even I come second.โ
Silence. Why does that sound jealous? Weโre her babies! they thought.
Yet, Byronโs words eased their stubbornness. He seemed far more villainous than them. If Mom doesnโt despise him, why would she despise us?. Comparison brought comfort.
Will tilted his head. โDad, schoolโs having a family outing Friday. Will you and Mom go?โ It had been rescheduled due to recent rain. Theo, though outwardly unconcerned, showed quiet anticipation; it wasn't about impressing classmates, but a first for him.
โYes, Iโll be there,โ Byron promised.

Theo nodded stiffly. โThen Iโll grant you this honor. Ouch!โ
Byron flicked his head. โImpudent.โ
Theo pouted, inwardly despising Byron.
Later, the boys sat cross-legged, meticulously cleaning their sacred books.
โWill, Iโm skipping snacks this month, saving for new books. Donโt be sad,โ Theo said softly.
Will, lost in thought, finally replied, โWhat? Oh, itโs fine if the books are damaged, but I wonโt tolerate them slandering Maeve. Letโs wait.โ
Theo grinned, understanding instantly. โI like that.โ
Byron left the room, finding Maeve tending the garden, humming contentedly. The scene struck a familiar chord, a fleeting memory. He texted Archer, instructing him to investigate the source of the rumors. He wouldnโt stoop to their level, but their parents would face consequences.
Archer replied, โ[Got it],โ forwarding two reports. Byronโs expression hardened, an impenetrable wall.
Maeveโs humming drifted up from below, momentarily thawing the icy facade.
That night, in the master bedroomโฆ
โHenry secretly swapped blood samples. Thatโs why his paternity test was positive,โ Maeve said anxiously. โUnless he knew my biological father, he couldnโt get that sample. Can we find my father through DNA?โ
Byron pulled her close. โThe hospital didnโt keep his samples. Itโs difficult.โ Maeve slumped against him. โI see.โ
โNot curious about your father?โ Byron asked, amused.
โNot really,โ Maeve admitted, โBut I wonder what heโs like.โ To make my mother leave everything for himโฆ he must be extraordinary.
โWant to meet him?โ
Maeve hesitated. โNo. He abandoned my mother. He wouldnโt care about me.โ Her motherโs poor health stemmed partly from that betrayal. Plus, Wrenโs warning echoed in her mind: Men are fickle, especially businessmen. Be careful. Maeve suspected her father was a businessman, explaining Wrenโs change in attitude towards Byron.
Byron gazed at Maeveโs face, bathed in the soft light. He kissed her. โMy earlier promise still stands.โ
