Chapter 506

Will was deep in thought. Theoโ€™s lips tightened. โ€œWhat if I go too far?โ€

Byron rubbed their heads. โ€œIโ€™ve got your backs. Donโ€™t worry about mistakes, or Mom finding out. As long as you donโ€™t cause trouble, sheโ€™ll always support you.โ€

Their eyes welled up. They knew their motherโ€™s unwavering love, but feared disappointing her. They craved her approval, wanting only to show their best selves.

Byron saw their apprehension. โ€œWhy do you think your mother and I are together?โ€

Theo mumbled, โ€œYou forced Mom, used her weaknessesโ€ฆ threatened her. Otherwise, youโ€™d attack her friends, imprison herโ€ฆโ€

Byronโ€™s temples throbbed. โ€œWatch less TV.โ€ He thought, What kind of monster am I in their imaginations?

Will pondered. โ€œDad, is Mom aware of yourโ€ฆ true side?โ€

Byron smiled, stroking Willโ€™s hair. โ€œYes, she knew from the start. Donโ€™t treat her as fragile. Even at your worst, youโ€™re her cutest, kindest babies. Even I come second.โ€

Silence. Why does that sound jealous? Weโ€™re her babies! they thought.

Yet, Byronโ€™s words eased their stubbornness. He seemed far more villainous than them. If Mom doesnโ€™t despise him, why would she despise us?. Comparison brought comfort.

Will tilted his head. โ€œDad, schoolโ€™s having a family outing Friday. Will you and Mom go?โ€ It had been rescheduled due to recent rain. Theo, though outwardly unconcerned, showed quiet anticipation; it wasn't about impressing classmates, but a first for him.

โ€œYes, Iโ€™ll be there,โ€ Byron promised.

Chapter 300

Theo nodded stiffly. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll grant you this honor. Ouch!โ€

Byron flicked his head. โ€œImpudent.โ€

Theo pouted, inwardly despising Byron.

Later, the boys sat cross-legged, meticulously cleaning their sacred books.

โ€œWill, Iโ€™m skipping snacks this month, saving for new books. Donโ€™t be sad,โ€ Theo said softly.

Will, lost in thought, finally replied, โ€œWhat? Oh, itโ€™s fine if the books are damaged, but I wonโ€™t tolerate them slandering Maeve. Letโ€™s wait.โ€

Theo grinned, understanding instantly. โ€œI like that.โ€

Byron left the room, finding Maeve tending the garden, humming contentedly. The scene struck a familiar chord, a fleeting memory. He texted Archer, instructing him to investigate the source of the rumors. He wouldnโ€™t stoop to their level, but their parents would face consequences.

Archer replied, โ€œ[Got it],โ€ forwarding two reports. Byronโ€™s expression hardened, an impenetrable wall.

Maeveโ€™s humming drifted up from below, momentarily thawing the icy facade.

That night, in the master bedroomโ€ฆ

โ€œHenry secretly swapped blood samples. Thatโ€™s why his paternity test was positive,โ€ Maeve said anxiously. โ€œUnless he knew my biological father, he couldnโ€™t get that sample. Can we find my father through DNA?โ€

Byron pulled her close. โ€œThe hospital didnโ€™t keep his samples. Itโ€™s difficult.โ€ Maeve slumped against him. โ€œI see.โ€

โ€œNot curious about your father?โ€ Byron asked, amused.

โ€œNot really,โ€ Maeve admitted, โ€œBut I wonder what heโ€™s like.โ€ To make my mother leave everything for himโ€ฆ he must be extraordinary.

โ€œWant to meet him?โ€

Maeve hesitated. โ€œNo. He abandoned my mother. He wouldnโ€™t care about me.โ€ Her motherโ€™s poor health stemmed partly from that betrayal. Plus, Wrenโ€™s warning echoed in her mind: Men are fickle, especially businessmen. Be careful. Maeve suspected her father was a businessman, explaining Wrenโ€™s change in attitude towards Byron.

Byron gazed at Maeveโ€™s face, bathed in the soft light. He kissed her. โ€œMy earlier promise still stands.โ€
