“You get what I’m saying, right? Octa from the Goodman family is at the height of his power, and he has no children. If this is true, then this is his only offspring.”

Jonathan frowned in disgust. “No wonder he’s so crazy!” He’s rotten to the core.

“He doesn’t know who you are. Right now, you’re just a minor professor, and although you have some status in your field, in his eyes, you’re like a nobody, someone who can’t and shouldn’t provoke him.”

“You broke his hand; there’s no telling how he’ll retaliate. Be careful.”

“Yeah,” Jonathan acknowledged.

“If possible, I’d suggest keeping this as low-key as possible.”

Someone who’s got nothing to lose is dangerous, and getting tangled with a madman like Shane can be messy. It’s said that Shane almost beat his cousin to death before; that’s why he was sent to Maviston.

Mateo meant well, but clearly, Jonathan wasn’t planning to listen.

“No way! There’s no reconciling with him!”

“Why not?” Mateo, unaware of their entanglement, couldn’t help but ask.

“If someone laid a hand on your wife, could you tolerate it?” Jonathan’s tone was both commanding and sinister.

Mateo choked out, “Definitely not!”

“Anyway, be careful. I’ll let Maddox and the others know about this too, so they can keep an eye out.”

“Alright.”

Jonathan was about to hang up when Mateo shouted from the other end. “After all the help I’ve given you, can’t you at least say thank you? Does your conscience not bother you? I’ve never even met your wife. For your love, I’ve stayed in this godforsaken place for days, and you don’t feel a bit guilty?”

Jonathan chuckled softly. As Mateo was about to continue his rant, Jonathan said, “Come over for dinner tomorrow, and remember to bring a gift, and watch your mouth!”

Without another word, he hung up.

Mateo, though hung up on, wasn’t angry; his mind was already on meeting Sierra openly tomorrow.

He eagerly messaged their group, minus Jonathan: “Guys, I’m meeting Jon’s wife tomorrow. Jon personally invited me.”

Maddox, Draven, and Stone went silent after reading his messages.

“I’ll be the first one to meet the sister-in-law officially!” Mateo boasted.

He was about to continue when he realized he had been removed from the group chat.

“Hmph! Can’t take a joke!”

Kicked out of the group. Mateo wasn’t upset; he was still happily singing.

Meanwhile, Shane was reviewing a report on Jonathan. Everything about Jonathan—birth, family, education—seemed normal, at least on the surface. Shane had had him investigated ever since Jonathan appeared, but all they found was superficial. He had always felt Jonathan was dangerous, which is why he had hesitated to act.

Thinking it over, he dialed a number.

“Yes, don’t kill him; I just want one of his hands,” Shane said, looking at his injured hand.

After hanging up, he glanced at the computer screen filled with various photos of Sierra—fearful, desperate, sad, but mostly those fiery, defiant eyes.

Remembering the news he had gathered at the hospital today, his lips curled up slightly, his expression almost pleased. He murmured, “How pitiful, her only relative is dying! Let me help you out!”

Saying this, Shane picked up another phone and made a call.

“You want Sierra on the team, right? Here’s a good chance. Her grandma has cancer and is dying. You know what to do.”

After hanging up, Shane looked again at the photos on his computer, muttering to himself, “You owe me one more time.”

Sierra was completely unaware of these machinations. She didn’t even know about Jonathan’s friend coming for dinner until Jonathan mentioned it the next day.

“Today? Why didn’t you say something sooner!” Sierra said, heading to the kitchen to check supplies, remembering that Jonathan’s place wasn’t well-stocked.
