The fact that Johnathan woke up at all had shocked everyoneโback then, his heart had clearly stopped, and he wasnโt breathing. Maybe it was what they called being โreborn after facing death.โ
Only a few people knew he was still alive. It had all started with a sudden idea in his mindโto fake his death.
Once he was "dead," many people would let their guard down, and theyโd be able to use that to catch a lot of people connected to the case. To make it believable, they had even held a real funeral. Everyone else had been kept in the dark; only those closest to him knew the truth. Because of that, everything seemed especially real, which led to everything that happened next.
โTheyโve already arrested several people from the special hospital. Theyโre following the leads now,โ Maddox said.
The ones from the hospital were just small fry. What really mattered were the people higher up. Besides, with what happened to Johnathan, there had definitely been people who wanted to use the chaos to swallow up the Wynn family. In short, the power struggle behind the scenes was extremely complicated. Everyone tacitly avoided discussing it and stuck to safer topics.
They were all busy people, and there was still a lot of cleanup work left. No one stayed too long. They agreed to meet again over the weekend and then went their separate ways.
Johnathan had a mountain of work to catch up on. He had โdied,โ and now he was suddenly โaliveโ again. A lot of things were waiting for him. First up: he had to return to the Wynn family estate.
โComing with me?โ
Johnathan reached out a hand to Sierra. โGrandpa insisted I bring you back with me, no matter what.โ
He smiled. โRight now, youโve got a much better reputation with them than I do.โ
Wayne used to have some doubts about Sierra, but after everything that happened, he was completely on her side. Let alone the fact that sheโd essentially saved his eldest grandsonโs life; just her calm and steady presence during the crisis had deeply impressed him.
Faced with Johnathanโs invitation, Sierra said: โYou go handle your business first. Iโll come later. Dicksonโs coming over.โ
The whole ordeal with Johnathan had been so big that even Dickson had heard about it. He had called several times, but it had been impossible to explain everything over the phone, so he was coming in person today.
โIโll let Grandpa know weโll come back a little later. I havenโt seen Dickson in a while, anyway.โ
With that agreed, Johnathan left to take care of his affairs.
Dickson arrived shortly after. He had just returned from a training program overseas. Heโd first seen the news of Johnathanโs funeral on TVโit had scared him half to death. Heโd rushed back on the next available flight.
โSierra, what the hell happened with you and Johnathan?โ Dickson asked anxiously.
Sierra briefly explained the fake-death setup Johnathan had used. Dickson listened, stunned. This whole thing had been that intense? And he hadnโt known a thing! No wonder Sierra had called him before, warning him to be careful. He hadnโt realized things were that dangerous.
โAnd now? Is it over?โ
โIt is. The ones who needed to be caught have been caught.โ
Hearing that, Dickson finally relaxed.
It had been a while since heโd come home. Johnathan and Sierra had dinner with him, and then the two of them returned to the old estate.
Today, the estate was especially lively. News of Johnathanโs โresurrectionโ couldnโt be hiddenโand they hadnโt tried. Many people came to ask questions, but the old man had sent them all away. Only Chase, Jose, and Susie were allowed to stay.
Chase knew his son didnโt want to see him, but he had still insisted on coming. He just needed to see Johnathan standing there, alive.
What was rare, though, was that this time, Johnathan didnโt show the usual cold rejection when he saw them. He wasnโt warm, but he didnโt turn them away either. He even noddedโthat had never happened before.
After โdying,โ he had seen clearly who was genuine and who wasnโt. At the funeral, Susie had cried until she fainted. That hadnโt been an actโit had really happened.
Even though he still didnโt understand it, some of the hostility in his heart had faded. But at the same time, his doubts had deepened. If Susie cared that much about himโcared so much about his motherโthen why had she done something so unforgivable back then?
The more he thought about it, the more holes he saw in what had happened all those years ago. Because of Johnathanโs rare gesture of goodwill, Chase and Susie, who had been planning to leave, immediately decided to stay. Both of them were visibly emotional.
It had been twenty years. This was the first time Johnathan had ever shown them any kindness.
Wayne watched the scene and felt relieved. After thinking for a moment, he said: โSince everyoneโs here today, letโs talk about your marriage.โ
