Chapter 442 What We Owe Him
Hearing her son say that again, Susie frowned. โWhy are you talking like this again? Are you still holding something against your brother?โ
โOf course not. I just think you care about him too much,โ Jose said, half-joking. โEven if we really do owe him, Mom, you care so much about him, sometimes it feels like heโs your real son.โ
โEnough. What nonsense are you saying now?โ Susieโs face turned even more unpleasant.
Jose pressed on while the iron was hot. โMom, you always say we owe him. Owe him what, exactly? Just because I got sick back then, and Dad took me to the hospital, and his mom happened to jump off the building? That was an accident. No one wanted that to happen.โ
Susie didnโt know why her son was suddenly so fixated on the past. Seeing how persistent he was, she finally said, โOf course it wasnโt just that. Iโve told youโWendy saved my life. If it werenโt for her, Iโd be dead.โ
โThen why did you steal her husband?โ Jose asked the kind of question that cuts deep.
Susie didnโt know how to answer. She only mumbled, โYou donโt understand.โ
Just then, Chase came out, and Susie quickly called him over so they could leave.
If earlier Jose only wanted to help because Johnathan had asked him, then now, he genuinely wanted to know what had happened all those years ago.
Johnathan was right. They really had kept a lot from him. But what, exactly?
While the Wynn family was busy discussing Johnathan and Sierraโs wedding, other families were talking about the Wynns themselves.
โClassic Johnathan,โ Jade sighed. โHe tricked everyone.โ
At the time, he had really believed something had happened to Johnathan. Heโd even started plotting. After all, the Wynn family was a huge pieโeveryone wanted a slice. He was no exception.
Still, he had at least kept a sliver of caution and didnโt make a move, since Wayne was still around. And thank god for that hesitation. Otherwise, heโd be one of the people losing sleep right now.
Thinking that, he looked over at Shane. โSince Johnathanโs still alive, you should probably go back.โ
โHah.โ Shane gave a strange laugh. โIโm not going back. Iโm staying in the Capital City.โ
โDonโt be ridiculous.โ Jade frowned.
Shane couldnโt be bothered to explain. He just said, โJohnathan wonโt stop me.โ
After all, this was part of the deal between him and Johnathan.
Sierra didnโt even know Johnathan and Shane had a partnership. So when Shane called, Johnathan instinctively stepped away from her.
โTalk,โ he said flatly.
Shane gave a short snort. โKnew it. Someone like you is a curse that lasts forever. I figured you wouldnโt die so easily.โ
โCut the crap.โ Johnathanโs voice was cold. โI know what youโre trying to say. You can come back. Just stay in your lane.โ
He was about to hang up when Shane said: โYou really believe the leader of that group was actually caught?โ
Johnathan didnโt answer. But the way his breathing changed made his stance clear.
Shane let out a soft chuckle. โWhat a coincidence. I donโt believe it either. Iโm going to keep digging. Letโs see who finds them first.โ
Just as he finished his sentence, Johnathan hung up.
Shane tugged at the corner of his lips and glanced at a message on his phone. It was unclear what he was thinking.
On the other end, Johnathan stood in silence after the call. He didnโt think this was the end of it.
That groupโs leader died way too easily. Even though Quinn and that other guyโs reactions confirmed the one who died really was the ringleader, Johnathan couldnโt believe someone like that would die so convenientlyโcutting off his own escape route like that.
Either he was just a puppet, or the person who died wasnโt really him.
If it was the first, that was manageable. But if it was the secondโฆ then things were serious.
Hardly anyone had known about that dayโs operation. If the person who died was a fake, they mustโve gotten advance warning.
How did the information leak?
A few faces flashed through Johnathanโs mind. He pressed his lips together.
โWhat are you thinking about?โ Sierra had been watching him drift off ever since the call ended and couldnโt help asking.
โI was thinking about how we should do our wedding.โ Johnathan looked at her. He really had been thinking about that too.
He was torn. On one hand, he wanted to give Sierra a grand ceremony. On the other, he just wanted it to be the two of them. They didnโt need anyone else to witness it.
