Chapter 52

Christopher clearly knew about the gas leak. Otherwise, why would he have sent Cynthia to the hospital first?

In the end, Melody was left struggling to breathe, only to faint at the door. How painful and miserable! Christopher was quite handsome, but who would have thought he would be such a heartless, unfaithful scoundrel?

Christopher drove to the nearest hospital, calling Melody three or four times, but she didn't answer. "Damn it! Isn't there a nurse around? Couldn't someone answer the phone?" he muttered angrily, then suddenly remembered he had smashed Melody's phone the previous night. He fell silent immediately, his teeth gritted, a mixture of worry and panic flooding his heart.

Cynthia was still conscious and able to call his name, but Melody had fainted and had to be taken away by ambulance. If it weren't for the kind-hearted people, Melody might have… Christopher couldn't bear to imagine the consequences. He regretted not realizing sooner that the strange smell was due to a gas leak. He never went into the kitchen; the most he did was reheat food in the microwave. If only he had more common sense.

In the same emergency room, the doctor, seeing his urgency, said, "Your girlfriend has been transferred to a regular ward."

"Doctor, where's the patient brought in by the ambulance?" Christopher asked urgently.

The two spoke simultaneously, momentarily confusing Christopher. The doctor seemed puzzled too. Ambulance? Wasn't he referring to the curly-haired woman?

"She's not my girlfriend. She's my wife. Is she in the ward? What's the ward number?" Christopher asked again.

"Which one are you talking about?" The doctor furrowed his brows.

"The one brought in by the ambulance, not the one I brought in earlier," Christopher quickly explained.

The doctor found the situation confusing. First, it was his girlfriend, and now his wife?

"The patient is being treated for gas poisoning," the doctor said.

Christopher stiffened, his eyes widening. Melody was poisoned? Cynthia had only inhaled a small amount, but Melody…

Following the doctor's directions, Christopher hurried to the emergency room, waiting anxiously outside for almost an hour, tormented by guilt, regret, and self-blame. If only he had brought Melody to the hospital earlier.

Finally, the emergency room door opened, and he rushed to ask about her condition. The doctor, removing his mask, said, "After treatment in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, the patient has stabilized."

Christopher, who had been tense, finally relaxed slightly, his shoulders slumping in relief.

"Are you a family member?" the doctor asked.

"Yes. I'm her husband," Christopher replied.

"Do you know that if she had been brought in even a few minutes later, she would have suffered cardiac arrest and brain death? Gas poisoning is no joke. It only takes ten minutes to lose consciousness and fifteen minutes to induce shock," the doctor said sternly.

Christopher stood there, stunned, filled with pain and regret. Melody had almost died. And it was his fault for not getting her medical attention sooner.

She was transferred to another ward for observation, and no one could enter. Christopher stood there, staring through the glass window at her. She was pale, with an oxygen mask on her face, lying there, on the brink of death.
