Chapter 60
Melody ended the conversation and closed her phone, but Heidi immediately called her via video call. She answered, and Heidi, seeing the breakfast shop in the background, exclaimed, “You’re up this early? Aren’t you going to adjust to the time difference?”
“Time difference? I can force my body to adjust in two days,” Melody replied casually, as if it were a simple biological function.
“Wow! You’re still as tough as ever,” Heidi commented. “Did you see the gossip I sent you? Why aren’t you responding?”
Before Melody could reply, Heidi added, “Oh, I almost forgot. You’ve been abroad these past two years, so you probably don’t even know who Christopher is.”
Melody lowered her gaze, silent. How could she not know him? She had been his nanny for two years.
“He went to our college too, but was in the Department of Finance and Banking. We studied digital media arts. I heard he broke up with his girlfriend in his third year, but now, four years later, they’re back together…” Heidi continued, her words slightly muffled as she brushed her teeth.
Melody didn’t want to interrupt her enthusiasm and quietly lowered the volume. Heidi was her college roommate and one of her closest friends, but she didn’t know that Melody and Christopher had attended the same high school, even the same class. Melody had hidden everything well, including her long-held crush, which she had never shared with anyone.
After a long monologue, Heidi noticed Melody hadn’t replied and asked, “Are you listening?”
“I’m listening. Keep going,” Melody responded.
“I’ll tell you why I started paying attention to him. A year ago, my dad actually tried to set me up with him, but it ended up being a mix-up because they said Christopher had already gotten married,” Heidi continued. “Hey, do you think he’s divorced and getting back with his ex, or is he cheating?”
Those last words caught Melody’s attention, and she quickly scrolled down to take a screenshot, but the post was gone. It was the same as last time, with that “hug to fame” moment. Luckily, many media outlets had posted about it, and she had taken screenshots, but later, all the posts were deleted. Fortunately, Heidi had also taken a screenshot, providing further evidence of his infidelity.
“It doesn’t matter what he’s doing. It has nothing to do with us,” Melody replied.
“We haven’t spoken for two years, so I wanted to find something to discuss with you,” Heidi said.
The two chatted a bit more before hanging up. As Melody headed home, she organized all the evidence of Christopher’s infidelity on her phone, especially the texts and photos Cynthia had sent her. Cynthia probably didn’t expect it. From the beginning, Melody had made backups, anticipating needing them someday.
Meanwhile, in the Fuller Group’s president’s office:
“Mr. Fuller, we’ve handled the trending news online, but since it was posted at midnight, the PR department couldn’t address it in time, and it ended up trending this morning,” Sheldon reported.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Fuller. Last night, the staff on duty finished their shift at 11:30 pm. Starting today, we will implement night shifts,” the PR department manager, Ryan Wade, apologized, bowing his head.
Christopher sat with his hands crossed on his desk. His expression was dark, his anger simmering. But why didn’t he lash out immediately? It wasn’t because he was angry at the PR staff, but because of Cynthia. She posted it at midnight. Did she do it on purpose? She wanted the news to trend overnight, so it would be too late for Christopher to do anything in the morning. What was she really trying to do?
Sheldon and Ryan nervously awaited his reprimand, but after a long pause, they realized he hadn’t scolded anyone yet. They cautiously looked up. Christopher’s terrifying expression clearly showed he was angry, but strangely, he didn’t explode with fury.
