Chapter 74
“Where’s Melody? Why didn’t she come pick me up?” Christopher began to rant, slurring his words.
“Mr. Fuller drank a little too much. He won’t be going to the company this afternoon. I’ll take him home,” Cynthia explained to Sheldon.
Sheldon looked at Christopher, whose face seemed perfectly normal, and said, “He doesn’t seem drunk. He can still recognize who I am.”
It was clear he had meant to call Melody but had dialed Sheldon by mistake.
“He’s really drunk,” she insisted. “Otherwise, would he be sitting here on the roadside looking like this?”
Sheldon looked at her, sensing that if she took Christopher back, she would likely leave him in a mess. He spoke firmly, “Mr. Fuller is quite clear-headed. He still has two international meetings to attend this afternoon. He can’t take the day off.”
Cynthia was about to suggest rescheduling the meetings, but Sheldon continued, “There are projects worth billions of dollars. Are you prepared to take responsibility if the meetings are delayed?”
Cynthia was speechless. Billions of dollars. That was such a huge amount. If Christopher sobered up later and realized she had forcibly taken him away, she would be in serious trouble. Ultimately, she could only watch as Sheldon took Christopher away, stomping her feet in frustration.
Meanwhile, outside a residential area, Melody had arrived home. Heidi followed her upstairs. Looking at the modest 860-square-foot apartment, she couldn’t help but joke, “This place is so small, even smaller than the bathroom in my house.”
“Please bear with it, Ms. Brown. This is the place for people like us from the lower class,” Melody smiled and replied. “I live alone, and it doesn’t need to be big. Plus, the location and property management are great, so I paid in full.”
“It has two bedrooms. I’ll sleep here tonight,” Heidi said, eyeing the apartment.
Looking at Heidi, who had been dismissive one second and was about to check in the next, Melody smiled and nodded.
Today wasn’t too tiring, but it was a bit surreal. She couldn’t even eat her meal peacefully, so she decided to avoid a 9-mile radius around Christopher’s company.
“When you got in Anthony’s car earlier, you missed the good show I was talking about this morning,” Heidi said, settling onto the couch.
Melody was putting away some clothes and shoes she had bought, her face showing no expression at Heidi’s comment.
“It was so funny. I ran into Christopher and that mistress when I went to the bathroom. I told him he was cheating, and he kept denying it while holding her hand,” Heidi continued. “And then he ran out in a drunken stupor. He didn’t even know what he was doing and blocked my ear. Tsk. His wife is really unlucky.”
Melody, the unlucky one, could only remain silent. She never imagined that one day, she would be ridiculed by Heidi. It felt surreal.
At 3:00 pm, in the president’s office at Fuller Group, Christopher woke up from his nap, his head a little dizzy. He realized he was in the office lounge and frowned in confusion. He then went out and asked Sheldon to bring him coffee.
When Sheldon came in, he asked, “How do you feel, Mr. Fuller? Is your head still spinning? Do you need a hangover remedy?”
Christopher, still confused, asked, “Why would I need a hangover remedy?”
Sheldon replied, “Did you really forget? You got drunk at lunch and kept insisting on calling Mrs. Fuller.”
Hearing this, Christopher accidentally spat out the coffee he had just sipped. His face darkened, his ears burning with embarrassment. He tried to recall the events but couldn’t remember much. Panicked, he grabbed his phone and found that he had called Melody dozens of times. But she hadn’t picked up a single call. He was conflicted; it was probably for the best that she hadn’t answered. Otherwise, she would have witnessed his embarrassing behavior, which would have been mortifying. However, he also felt inexplicably angry that she had blocked him and refused to answer.
