Chapter 113: Do You Think I'll Believe That?

“Hilda, do you know if Jared is acquainted with Ms. Sullivan? If not, why would she be inquiring about him?” Maria asked Hilda curiously. Hilda had known Jared for a long time, so Maria assumed she might know his affairs.

Hilda shook her head. “I don’t know, but he just got out of prison, so he probably doesn't know someone important like her.”

Maria thought this made sense. He’d been in prison for three years; how could he know Josephine? “I just hope he doesn’t talk too much to her and get us all in trouble,” she worried. She found Jared unreliable.

“He won’t,” Hilda said confidently. She had complete faith in him.

Meanwhile, Jared awkwardly opened the office door and entered. Seeing Josephine, he grinned.

“Didn’t you say you were at home?” she demanded coldly.

“Uh… I am at home! I consider the office my home now,” he replied, a sudden idea striking him.

“Who is Hilda Wallace?” Josephine asked directly.

“Will you believe me if I say she’s my sister?” Jared asked, watching her intently.

Josephine chuckled coldly. “Do you think I’ll believe that?”

Jared gave an awkward smile and confessed, explaining his relationship with Hilda. “Hilda and I are just longtime neighbors. Our relationship isn't what you think…”

Josephine felt relieved after his explanation. She trusted him, but wanted to hear it from him.

“I didn’t assume anything about your relationship. You two can do whatever you want; it’s none of my business. How presumptuous of you!” She rolled her eyes, though secretly pleased.

Jared, sensing her change in mood, asked, “How did you know I’m here? And about Hilda?” He was curious how she knew he worked at her company. He was just an ordinary employee; news of his employment shouldn't have reached her.

Josephine stood. “Never mind. You could have just told me you wanted a job; I could have made you general manager. Why be a sales representative? You don't need the money.”

“I don’t want to be general manager, and I don’t have the time. I only came to appease my parents. Otherwise, they’d worry. Besides, I have a lot to do, so I won’t be staying long.” Jared waved his hands, wanting to avoid the responsibility.

“Oh, why don’t your parents want to live at Dragon Bay anymore? Isn’t it nice there?” Josephine asked, remembering Gary and Hannah's insistence on leaving the mansion.

Jared shook his head. “I’m not sure. I don’t know why they were so adamant about leaving Dragon Bay and said those things.” He continued, “But I feel like someone told them something that made them leave.”

Josephine gasped. “I know! It must have been Xavier! He’s unbelievable. He thinks I’ll be interested in him because of this. So underhanded!”

“Xavier? The general manager?” Jared was stunned.

He finally understood why Xavier had appeared during his interview and hired him. Xavier had known about him and his relationship with Josephine all along!
