Chapter 121: Might as Well
Slap!
Before Zayne could finish his sentence, another slap landed on his face.
โJaredโฆโ
Slap!
โIโฆโ
Slap!
Another sharp slap followed as Zayne opened his mouth again. He was beaten to a pulp.
Finally, Zayne dared not speak. He stared at Jared with fearful eyes.
Jared and the others were terrified by the assault. No one dared to speak. Lydia trembled, sitting quietly in her chair, fearing a similar fate.
Their gazes shifted to Xavier, the general manager. They expected him to intervene, eager to see how he would handle Jared's actions.
To everyone's surprise, Xavier remained silent, his expression grim. The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
After a few minutes, Xavier broke the silence. "That's enough. Serve the dishes!"
Everyone was baffled. Questions raced through their minds. After Jared's behavior, why was he still at dinner? Shouldn't Mr. Jennings have fired him?
Was there a secret connection between them?
Impossible! Their earlier interaction clearly showed they weren't friends.
Where did Jared get the courage to assault Zayne? And why did Mr. Jennings do nothing?
Maria tended to Zayne's swollen face, her eyes fixed on Jared.
Soon, waiters brought in the dishesโappetizing and expensive.
Only when the table was laden with food did their gazes shift from Jared. The luxurious spread made everyone salivate.
Jared took his fork and began to eat. Although many wanted to comment on his eating before Xavier, no one dared, given Xavier's apparent unconcern.
Xavier said, "Let's eat, everyone. Don't be shy!" Everyone then devoured the food, relishing the rare treat. [Remove the advertising link.]
Hilda, though amazed, remained composed. Unlike the others, she didn't grab for the food. This put her at a disadvantage; the plates emptied before she could eat.
Jared noticed Hilda's shyness and served her. "Hilda, eat up! Since you're not paying, eat your fill!"
In an instant, Hilda's bowl was overflowing.
Xavier observed Jared. What does Josephine see in him? he wondered.
Throughout dinner, Xavier ate nothing, repeatedly checking his watch, appearing anxious.
Hilda stood, saying, "Jared, I need to use the restroom."
Minutes later, she ran back, her face pale.
"What's wrong, Hilda?" Jared asked.
"I-It's nothing," Hilda stammered, shaking her head.
But as she finished, the door burst open, and four burly men entered.
One man demanded, "Hey, little girl! Did you not realize you bumped into me? Don't you need to apologize?"
"I-It was an accident. I'm sorry!" Hilda apologized frantically.
As everyone was shocked by the men's intrusion, Xavier gave an almost imperceptible smile.
