Chapter 19: Pointers
Felix turned to Jared, saying, "Mr. Chance, had I known you were Leyton's problem, I never would have accepted his money. Please, be magnanimous and show me some mercy!"
Before Jared could respond, Leyton exploded. "What in the hell is going on? You're the Crimson Dragon Gang! Why are you afraid of some random ex-convict? You call yourselves the fiercest gang in Horington?"
Leyton was baffled. What was so frightening about Jared? So he could fight? The Crimson Dragon Gang had hundreds of fighters! It didn't matter how skilled Jared was; he couldn't defeat hundreds of people at once.
"What are you babbling about? The Crimson Dragon Gang doesn't take orders from you. Shut up, or I'll kill you!" Felix glared coldly at Leyton.
Leyton fell silent under Felix's intense gaze.
Suddenly, a large crowd dressed in black surged toward them. Hundreds of armed men; the ground trembled under their approach.
Felix was astonished. Leyton was again bewildered. No one recognized them.
But recognition came quickly as the crowd drew closer. Tommy led the charge, revealing them as the Templar Regiment.
Felix's expression twisted at the sight of Tommy. Leyton was speechless as they passed him.
"Protect Mr. Chance! No one leaves!" Tommy commanded angrily.
"Yes!" the Templar Regiment responded in unison, forming a circle to block all exits.
"Are you all right, Mr. Chance?" Tommy asked anxiously, approaching Jared.
"Do I look like I'm not?" Jared smiled faintly.
Leyton was overwhelmed. Tommy had brought all these men to protect Jared? Why the respect? The Crimson Dragon Gang had bowed to Jared; now the Templar Regiment? The two fiercest gangs in Horington! What was happening?
"Felix, did your Crimson Dragon Gang ambush Mr. Chance? I'll kill you all!" Tommy was furious.
Uneasy as he was at Tommy's tone, Felix knew better than to retaliate. With their leader, Steven, away, he swallowed his pride.
"It's a misunderstanding. Leyton did it," Felix explained hastily.
Tommy's furious gaze turned to Leyton, who nearly wet himself.
Tommy lunged, slapping Leyton across the face. "If you ever touch Mr. Chance again, I'll kill you and bury your entire Scott family!"
Tommy's threat was credible. The Templar Regiment could easily destroy the Scott family.
"Tommy Lewis! The Scott family helped you! How dare you bring these people against me? How dare you hit me?" Leyton raged.
"That's precisely why you only got a slap. Otherwise, you'd be dead," Tommy said coldly.
Terrified, Leyton avoided Tommy's gaze, still puzzling over the gangs' fear of Jared.
"Mr. Chance!" Walter's voice rang out. He and Luca hurried toward Jared.
Relieved to see Jared unharmed, Walter sighed. "I heard the Crimson Dragon Gang was attacking you, Mr. Chance! I came as fast as I could! Thank goodness you're alright!"
