Chapter 242: Money Trees
โFrederick, what are you implying? Not everyone whoโs been to prison is a bad person. Donโt make that judgment,โ Josephine said, displeased by Frederickโs jeering at Jared.
Frederickโs expression darkened at her protectiveness. โJosephine, why are you attracted to this ex-convict? Why do you keep defending him? Donโt you know how I feel about you? If we were together, your family would prosper forever in Horington. Wouldnโt that be nice?โ
โFrederick, many envy your status, but Iโm not interested. Do you understand?โ Josephine retorted, casting him an annoyed look.
โWhy?โ Frederick demanded, enraged, grabbing her arm. โWhatโs better about him? Heโs an ex-convict! How could he possibly be better than me?โ His face contorted with rage.
Josephine winced. โFrederick, youโre hurting me!โ
Frederick, seemingly losing control, maintained his grip.
โFredโฆโ Williamโs expression hardened. This was unacceptable! How dare he injure his daughter before him? โYouโre courting death!โ
Jaredโs eyes narrowed, his aura menacing. He swiftly seized Frederickโs wrist.
Frederick shrieked, โArgh!โ The excruciating pain shot up his arm, loosening his grip on Josephine. She immediately hid behind Jared.
Jared lunged, aiming a punch at Frederick.
William yelled, โJared, please donโt!โ Frederick was the mayorโs son; the consequences of a fight would be unimaginable. If Jared didnโt hold back and accidentally killed him, theyโd be ruined.
Jared stopped his punch just in time, but Frederick, terrifiedโnever having been challenged like thisโhad wet himself.
โI will kill you if you dare touch Josephine again!โ Jared warned, pushing Frederick forcefully. The seemingly gentle nudge sent Frederick flying out of the pavilion, landing with a heavy thud.
Frederick scrambled up, his gaze venomous. Seeing his wet trousers, he was too embarrassed to stay. โBastard! Youโre just an ex-convict! How dare you defy me? Youโll pay for this!โ He spat the threat and fled.
William sighed in relief. โLuckily, you stopped. If youโd punched him, the consequences would have been terrible! Heโs the mayorโs son!โ
โI broke his wrist, though,โ Jared said quietly. Heโd known Frederickโs identity, but it didnโt concern him.
โWhat?โ William was stunned. โYou broke Frederickโs wrist? This is bad!โ
Josephine gasped. โWeโre doomed. He wonโt let this go!โ
Fear gripped father and daughter.
โWe need Mr. Grangeโs help. Even retired, heโs well-connected and should be able to assist.โ William thought of Walter. Even the wealthy Sullivans were merely โmoney treesโ to politicians.
Jared, puzzled by their concern, said, โI donโt think we need to panic. Itโs not like a broken wrist is incurable. As the mayor, his father should be reasonable.โ
