Chapter 242: Money Trees

โ€œFrederick, what are you implying? Not everyone whoโ€™s been to prison is a bad person. Donโ€™t make that judgment,โ€ Josephine said, displeased by Frederickโ€™s jeering at Jared.

Frederickโ€™s expression darkened at her protectiveness. โ€œJosephine, why are you attracted to this ex-convict? Why do you keep defending him? Donโ€™t you know how I feel about you? If we were together, your family would prosper forever in Horington. Wouldnโ€™t that be nice?โ€

โ€œFrederick, many envy your status, but Iโ€™m not interested. Do you understand?โ€ Josephine retorted, casting him an annoyed look.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Frederick demanded, enraged, grabbing her arm. โ€œWhatโ€™s better about him? Heโ€™s an ex-convict! How could he possibly be better than me?โ€ His face contorted with rage.

Josephine winced. โ€œFrederick, youโ€™re hurting me!โ€

Frederick, seemingly losing control, maintained his grip.

โ€œFredโ€ฆโ€ Williamโ€™s expression hardened. This was unacceptable! How dare he injure his daughter before him? โ€œYouโ€™re courting death!โ€

Jaredโ€™s eyes narrowed, his aura menacing. He swiftly seized Frederickโ€™s wrist.

Frederick shrieked, โ€œArgh!โ€ The excruciating pain shot up his arm, loosening his grip on Josephine. She immediately hid behind Jared.

Jared lunged, aiming a punch at Frederick.

William yelled, โ€œJared, please donโ€™t!โ€ Frederick was the mayorโ€™s son; the consequences of a fight would be unimaginable. If Jared didnโ€™t hold back and accidentally killed him, theyโ€™d be ruined.

Jared stopped his punch just in time, but Frederick, terrifiedโ€”never having been challenged like thisโ€”had wet himself.

โ€œI will kill you if you dare touch Josephine again!โ€ Jared warned, pushing Frederick forcefully. The seemingly gentle nudge sent Frederick flying out of the pavilion, landing with a heavy thud.

Frederick scrambled up, his gaze venomous. Seeing his wet trousers, he was too embarrassed to stay. โ€œBastard! Youโ€™re just an ex-convict! How dare you defy me? Youโ€™ll pay for this!โ€ He spat the threat and fled.

William sighed in relief. โ€œLuckily, you stopped. If youโ€™d punched him, the consequences would have been terrible! Heโ€™s the mayorโ€™s son!โ€

โ€œI broke his wrist, though,โ€ Jared said quietly. Heโ€™d known Frederickโ€™s identity, but it didnโ€™t concern him.

โ€œWhat?โ€ William was stunned. โ€œYou broke Frederickโ€™s wrist? This is bad!โ€

Josephine gasped. โ€œWeโ€™re doomed. He wonโ€™t let this go!โ€

Fear gripped father and daughter.

โ€œWe need Mr. Grangeโ€™s help. Even retired, heโ€™s well-connected and should be able to assist.โ€ William thought of Walter. Even the wealthy Sullivans were merely โ€œmoney treesโ€ to politicians.

Jared, puzzled by their concern, said, โ€œI donโ€™t think we need to panic. Itโ€™s not like a broken wrist is incurable. As the mayor, his father should be reasonable.โ€
