Chapter 26
Tommy and the others chuckled at Glen's words. Benedict's face flushed with embarrassment. Though unhappy, he remained silent.
"No, no, no!" Devin waved his hands, pulling Simon closer. "This is my son, Simon. Benedict is his father-in-law!"
Glen, grasping the situation, remained stern. "Why so many people, Mr. Moore? I intended a discreet dinner."
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Lowe. I'll get rid of them now!" Devin, shuddering, kicked Simon. "Get lost, you dimwits!"
Startled, Simon left immediately, followed by Benedict and his family. The experience was deeply embarrassing.
"What was that, Simon? Why didn't Mr. Lowe know we were coming?" Gianna demanded, furious.
"It's your fault!" Simon retorted, still smarting from the kick. "He wanted a peaceful meal, and you all barged in!" He blamed Stella, too, leaving her embarrassed.
"Enough!" Benedict glared at them. "Let's wait. Perhaps Mr. Moore can persuade Mr. Lowe."
"Yes, Dad will try," Simon agreed.
They returned to their room, wine glasses in hand, sullenly. Jared was packing the food into takeaway containers.
Jared wasn't surprised to see them.
"What are you doing?" Stella fumed. "Packing up before we're finished? Are you skipping out on the bill?" She also wanted to vent her frustration from earlier.
"Some of you said you were dining with the mayor," Jared retorted, a cold look in his eyes. He chuckled. "And I heard you weren't coming back. Or were youโฆ ignored and chased out?"
"Jealous much?" Javier sneered. "We dined with the mayor, even toasted him. You're just a useless ex-convict. You claimed you dined at Mr. Lowe's; he denied it."
Javier's lie was convincingly deceptive. Benedict's family knew it was a lie, but didn't correct him. Jared saw through it immediately, noting their full wine glasses.
"Javier," Jared snickered, "sharpen your lying skills. Your glasses are full! Your lie is as despicable as being a useless ex-convictโperhaps worse!"
