Chapter 343: Burnt

Josephine searched online for recipes to cook for Jared. Raised in a wealthy family, she had never cooked before, but she was willing to learn for him, no matter how difficult it was.

Jared watched her in the kitchen, his eyes filled with love. Just then, his phone rang. It was Walter.

"Mr. Chance, are you free? General Long, head of the Department of Justice in Summerbank, wishes to meet you," Walter said politely.

Jared frowned. "The Department of Justice? What do they want?"

"I'm not sure. He's hosting a dinner party at the Glamor Hotel and wants you there," Walter replied, admitting his ignorance of Jared's activities in Summerbank. He was simply delivering Anthony's message.

"All right, I'll go," Jared said, hanging up. He went to the kitchen to tell Josephine to stop cooking.

He was met with a cloud of smoke. He quickly removed the pot from the stove.

"Ah! What happened?" Josephine cried, seeing the smoke.

Jared opened the lid to reveal burnt pasta and a blackened pot bottom.

Josephine looked at him innocently. "Oops. I forgot to add water!"

Jared laughed. "It's okay. We don't need to cook. Someone's invited us to dinner!"

"Who?"

"Mr. Grange called. General Long from the Department of Justice in Summerbank wants to meet me at the Glamor Hotel," Jared explained.

Josephine's eyes widened anxiously. "Is this about what you did to the Whitaker family in Summerbank?"

Realization struck Jared. "That could be it! I don't know him. If he wants to see me, something's up."

"Should we just leave?" Josephine worried.

"Don't worry," Jared reassured her. "I've removed all the surveillance cameras; there's no way it can be traced back to me."

They arrived at the Glamor Hotel. To Jared's surprise, other people were there. Perhaps General Long wasn't after him for the Whitaker incident.

Indeed, William, Glen, and other influential Horington figures were present, ostensibly to curry favor with Anthony, a Summerbank native. Many guests greeted Jared; he responded accordingly.

In a corner, Lizbeth, in uniform, observed the guests. She was stunned to see Josephine.

"Josephine? What are you doing here?" Lizbeth asked, shocked.

"Lizbeth? What are you doing here?" Josephine echoed, equally surprised. She then complimented Lizbeth's uniform. "You look good!"

"I'm accompanying General Long," Lizbeth replied, sizing up Jared. "Who is he to you?"

Josephine glanced at Jared, then at her pendant. "He's Jared. He's my boyfriend!" Having accepted his token of love, their relationship was official.
