Chapter 67: Appreciation

"Squad Leader, to be honest, my company is also in trouble. If I can't overcome this crisis, I fear bankruptcy. Hiring him would only hinder his career," Franklin sighed, confessing.

Gary, embarrassed, said, "Franklin, I'm sorry to have caused you trouble. Don't worry about Jared. What problems is your company facing?"

"Our problems? Can you solve them?" Frieda sneered.

Gary blushed, stammering, "I"

Franklin glared at Frieda. "Shut up! Squad Leader, ignore her. My company deals with Glamorous Designs, but they've stopped supplying goods, halting our cash flow. I don't know how much longer I can hold on. As for Jared's job, I'll have Maria check with her company; it's a conglomerate with good benefits. He can work his way up."

Visibly upset, Maria retorted, "Dad, I'm just a salesperson! I have no such authority. Don't cause me trouble."

"You may not, but Zayne's the sales manager. Can't he hire one person?" Franklin demanded.

"Heโ€”" Maria began, but Franklin interrupted.

"Enough! Zayne will hire him. If he can't, I'll reconsider his suitability for you."

Maria, pouting angrily, fell silent.

Frieda, glancing at Jared, remonstrated, "Franklin, Maria worked hard to get that job. Are you causing unnecessary trouble? Does that company even hire ex-convicts?"

Jared, though stung by the "ex-convict" remark, controlled his temper, recognizing Franklin's good intentions.

"Dad, I'll get him an interview, but whether he gets the job depends on him," Maria said, rolling her eyes before returning to her bedroom.

Franklin awkwardly explained to Gary, "Squad Leader, please excuse her attitude. She's difficult."

Gary smiled wryly. He was in no position to be concerned about her attitude.

"Franklin, I appreciate your help. I have another engagement and must leave." Gary knew prolonging his stay would only cause further trouble.

"Squad Leader, let's have lunch first; I have reservations," Franklin offered quickly.

"Perhaps next time," Gary said, waving his hand.

Jared helped Hannah up. Franklin, aware of his family's hostility, smiled apologetically. "We should have a drink together soon."

As Franklin escorted his guests out, Frieda remained seated on the sofa, unconcerned.

Outside, Jared asked, "Mr. Saunders, what's the name of the company that owes you money?"

"Glamorous Designs. Do you know anyone there?" Franklin asked.

Jared shook his head. "No, but I'll try to collect the debt."

Franklin, assuming Jared might use force given his recent release from prison, said, "I appreciate that, but don't do anything illegal. Take care of your parents. Don't worry about my problems." He assumed Jared was a gangster.
