Lucas treasured Tiffany's watch. If she had really wanted to get married, he would have settled everything quickly. Instead, it was Evelyn who had to tile for the dim room.
Justine looked at Evelyn with concern. Evelyn gently squeezed Justine’s hand in response. She calmly shook her head. “It doesn’t matter anymore.” After all, the divorce papers were already signed. Once the final formalities were completed, she and Lucas would become strangers once again.
Even though Justine had the urge to publicly expose Tiffany as a homewrecker, she had to consider Evelyn’s situation.
“The main entrance, and we’ll go home,” she said, scratching her head, completely losing interest in the inspection. “I’m going to get the car. Once you’re done, just come out through the main…” She was afraid she’d get a heart attack if she stayed any longer.
Evelyn nodded, her expression cool and calm. “Right.” Once the material selection was finalized, Jacob wanted Evelyn to stay and go over it with Tiffany. But Evelyn excused herself, saying she had some work to do at the company.
As she waited for the elevator, the doors opened, and she stepped forward. She was caught off guard by the sight of Lucas inside. He stood tall and composed, his deep eyes landing on her for a brief moment before looking away without a word.
To any outsider, they didn’t look like a couple at all. He had truly mastered the art of covering his ties to the TechNova Group. Evelyn didn’t avoid him either. She calmly walked inside and stood behind him. She hadn’t expected Lucas to come to… but on second thought, Tiffany was here. So, of course, he would be too.
Lucas didn’t seem to have any intention of conversing with Evelyn. He was busy messaging on his phone. As Evelyn glanced at the electronic display to see which floor they were on, she inadvertently caught a glimpse of his screen. A WhatsApp message from someone using “na” as a contact name had popped up. The message read, “Just a bit of a headache. No need to come over. Maybe I’m just worn out from staying up all night with you yesterday.”
Evelyn quickly looked away. How could she not understand that was some sort of code for “baby”?
And if he and Tiffany had stayed up all night together, what else could it mean! Their relationship was clearly far more intimate than she had imagined.
Suddenly, Lucas put aside his phone and asked in a teasing tone, “Anything else?” She felt a little surprised Lucas had turned slightly to look at her. His eyes were devoid of emotion, as if he had just spoken to her in passing. She had entered a state of disbelief. But the only plausible explanation was probably because he had said she had a headache earlier.
While worrying about Tiffany, he just happened to ask about her as well, probably reminded him that Evelyn had also been…
At any other time, their bartering had always been different. Only Tiffany manipulated him, after all.
Teasingly, he seemed to not get it at all. “T’in lætti fw,” she replied calmly. “Alright, that’s good,” Lucas responded, cool and distant, but this time, he looked at her a second longer.
He seemed a little surprised that Evelyn didn’t use this opportunity to say…
Lucas’ gaze was unreadable, making Evelyn slightly self-conscious. “Do you have anything else…”
“Not calling me ‘honey’ anymore!”
Chapter 1
His gaze was indifferent, and his tone unchanged. Yet, his cheeks burned instantly. There was an undertone that made Evelyn uncomfortable. It wasn’t because of anything unseemly. Rather, it was because, in the past, she had forced herself to call him “honey.” Back then, she had only wanted Lucas to grow accustomed to it. Despite her shyness, every sentence she spoke had started with that term of endearment. Even during their most intimate moments, she had addressed him tenderly.
And yet, Lucas had hardly ever responded to her. Now that he had openly pointed it out, she felt embarrassed. He still seemed like the same Evelyn he had known.
Sensing the subtle change in Evelyn’s expression, Lucas wasn’t surprised. No matter how calm she appeared on the surface, she would always reveal her vulnerability in the end. He sighed lightly and turned away, putting an end to their conversation.
Evelyn, however, felt uneasy about his demeanor. It was about foreknowledge – reminding him that they would soon be divorced — when the elevator doors slid open. Lucas stepped out of the elevator without so much as a backward glance. Evelyn never even got the chance to speak.
