Chapter 154

The next day, Bruce returned to the Everett mansion with Roxanne.

"Grandma, I brought Roxy home to see you!" he announced.

Margaret lay quietly in bed, bedridden due to her health. Hearing her grandson's voice, she opened her eyes and whispered, "Bruce is here"

Roxanne quickly went to the bedside, taking Margaret's hand. "Grandma!" she greeted sweetly.

Margaret clasped both their hands together. "You must marry soon. Grandma wants to see you married! Have a child soon. Bruce isn't young anymore; it's time."

"Grandma, don't worry. You'll definitely meet your great-grandson!" Bruce reassured her. "I've discussed it with Roxy. We're getting married next month."

Margaret struggled to sit up. Bruce and Roxanne helped her, placing a pillow behind her back. "When is the wedding?" she asked.

"The eighth of next month!" they replied.

A smile lit up Margaret's face. "Oh, I should be able to make it! As long as I see you two married, I'll be satisfied!"

Bruce held his grandmother's hand. "Grandma, don't worry. You'll live to a ripe old age! I'll work hard so you meet your great-grandson soon."

Margaret smiled. "After you marry, live well. Be tolerant and accommodating."

"Yes, we will," they agreed.

Margaret spoke intermittently before her eyelids drooped. Bruce gently helped her lie down. "Grandma, rest. Roxy and I won't disturb you."

"Oh, okay," Margaret replied tiredly, falling asleep.

"Roxy, let's go," Bruce said.

"Okay!"

"You must take good care of Grandma around the clock. Nothing can go wrong!" he instructed the staff.

"Got it, Mr. Everett," the butler replied.

Bruce gave further instructions to the butler and nurses before leaving with Roxanne.

On the way back, Roxanne held Bruce's hand. His expression was cold and indifferent; he didn't reciprocate her affection. He was marrying Roxanne to fulfill his grandmother's wish and give Roxanne what she wanted—nothing more.

"The eighth of next month—we're finally getting married!" Roxanne exclaimed, her joy evident. Seeing Bruce's cold expression, however, her happiness dimmed. "Bruce, aren't you happy?" she asked softly.

Bruce subconsciously withdrew his hand and lit a cigarette. "I am."

"Then why do you look so glum?"

"I'm worried about Grandma's condition."

"Medical care is advanced. Grandma will recover!"

"I hope so. I'll take you home; then I'm going to the office."

Roxanne's face fell. "Bruce, it's Saturday. Do you still have to work?"

"I have an appointment with a client. Business," he explained.

"Alright," she replied reluctantly, knowing his social engagements were often excuses to avoid her. "Bruce, could you have the driver drop me off at the next intersection? I'll buy something and take a taxi home."

Bruce looked concerned. "Alright. Stop at the next intersection."

"Okay, Mr. Everett," the driver, Kody, responded.

They stopped at the busiest commercial street in Greyport.

"Goodbye, Bruce," Roxanne said.

"Goodbye," he replied.

After Bruce left, Roxanne called her friends for a shopping spree. Now that the marriage was certain, she wanted to show off.

Several well-dressed women arrived.

"Wow, Roxy, you're really getting married?" one asked enviously. Their tone implied disbelief that Bruce would choose Roxanne.

"Yes, the eighth! Be my bridesmaid!"

"Of course, it's my honor!"

"Roxy finally saw the light! Six years with Mr. Everett, and they're finally marrying!" another commented, equally envious.

"Congratulations!"

"Thank you!"

"Roxy, introduce us to Mr. Everett's friends!"

"Definitely!"

Roxanne's vanity was satisfied by the compliments. However, someone was watching from outside the restaurant. She caught a glimpse of Gavin, who quickly hid.

Roxanne lost her appetite for afternoon tea. "I have something urgent. I'll leave. Let's meet another day!"

"But we just got together…"

"Wedding details. I must go home!"

"Alright, we won't keep the bride!"

Roxanne left hurriedly.

Roxanne walked into a deserted alley. Gavin followed. They reached a trash station. Roxanne stopped, her expression dark.

"Come out!" she demanded.

Gavin limped out from behind a pillar. "Roxy"

Roxanne slapped him. "How can you still see me?"

"Roxy, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Gavin knelt, slapping himself. He'd been recovering from injuries inflicted by Bruce's men after a previous incident.

"Get up, don't let anyone see you!" Roxanne warned.

"Roxy, please forgive me!" Gavin cried.

"I won't. This is over. I'm getting married. Don't harass me."

"Roxy, I'm sorry. I'll never forgive myself!"

"You coward, get lost! I don't want to see you again!" Roxanne hissed.

Gavin hugged her thigh. "Roxy, I don't dare ask for forgiveness! I won't disturb your happiness. But if you need me, come to me."

"Get lost. As long as you never appear again, I'll forgive you!"

"Alright, I'll go…" Gavin scrambled away.

Roxanne watched him leave, a conflicted expression on her face. Despite hating his weakness, she remembered the joy he once brought her. She’d almost forgotten the rape incident, but the upcoming wedding spurred her to end things with him for good.

(The final sentence fragment "Even if Bruce oras trofy impose marry him!" is unclear and grammatically incorrect. It needs to be re-written or removed for clarity.)
