Chapter 168
Davian's face paled with fright. He frantically searched for something to save Irvin. Fortunately, numerous dead branches and leaves littered the area. Davian grabbed a long, dry branch and extended it toward the stream.
"Irvin, grab this branch! I'll pull you up!"
Irvin, bobbing in the water, desperately swam toward the branch, grasped it, and Davian hauled him ashore. The effort was immense, but finally, he dragged his brother to safety. Both boys were terrified and soaked.
"Brother, my clothes are wet."
Davian removed his own clothes. "Take yours off and let them dry. Otherwise, we'll catch a cold!"
"Okay!"
The two children stripped Greyport, a southern city, lacked a true winter, but being near December, the weather remained quite cold. Shivering, they wrung the water from their clothes.
"Let's hurry back to the mountain path!"
"Okay!"
The stream's edge was perilous. Although both children could swim, the swift current concealed underground rivers and swamps; a fall would be fatal. They climbed the mountain path, one step at a time.
"Brother, look! So many oranges!"
Several orange trees lined the path, laden with fruit. Davian frowned. "We can't eat wild fruit, can we?"
Irvin, starving, plucked several oranges. "I don't care. Let's eat some!"
He peeled one, bit into it, and spat it out.
"Pfft! This orange is so sour!"
"Don't eat random things. A stomachache would be trouble!"
Irvin discarded the orange, his face clouded with gloom. "Sigh, if I'd known we'd get lost, I wouldn't have come!"
"Now look at us. We can't even go back!"
"Davian, will they come looking for us if they find out we're missing?"
Davian's expression turned serious. "Definitely!"
Irvin rubbed his goosebumps, muttering, "Mommy, I miss you so much. Did you come back for us?"
"Let's go that way!"
"Davian, I'm so tired!"
"Irvin, hold on. Once we cross this mountain, we should reach the downtown area. We can get a taxi home then."
The boys were unaware they were in a wild bird sanctuary, deserted and isolated. They were walking in the wrong direction, deeper into the mountains.
Meanwhile, at the Haynes' house
Roxanne watched the news in bed, then gasped, seeing a report about Davian and Irvin's disappearance.
"Aren't those Joanna's children?"
She rushed downstairs. "Mom, look at the news!"
Ingrid, using a beauty apparatus, asked impatiently, "What news?"
"Joanna's children are missing!"
"Really?" Ingrid paused the apparatus, checked the phone, and sneered. "Well, this is retribution!"
"Mom, how did they disappear?"
"Karma! That's what that bitch gets for stealing Bruce from you! Serves her right! It's best if those children never return. Let's see what else she can use against you!"
"Mom, you didn't do it, did you?"
Ingrid's eyes widened. "Even if I wanted to, I couldn't!"
"Oh, as long as it wasn't you!"
Roxanne said nothing more, running upstairs with her phone. This incident demanded her attention; she needed to call and inquire.

Chapter 168 (Continued)
Beep, beep, beep! Bruce's phone rang. He answered.
"Hey!"
"Hey, Bruce!"
"What is it?"
Roxanne hesitated, stammering, "I saw the news. The children are missing?"
"Any leads?" Bruce's voice was grim. Irvin's previous disappearance involved Derick. If the Haynes family was involved again, he wouldn't be so forgiving.
"Bruce, I'm just concerned. How could I have leads?"
"If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up! I hope this has nothing to do with the Haynes family!"
"How could it?"
Bruce hung up.
"Hey" He'd hung up impatiently.
Joanna calmed down, analyzing the situation. They'd checked all the security cameras at the mountain's base; the children weren't there. Therefore, they must have gone up the mountain.
"They must still be on the mountain!"
She prepared to search again, but Bruce pulled her back.
"Joanna, we've searched many times. They can't be there!"
"No, they are! I checked all the cameras. They didn't go down!"
"Organize a search party!"
Bruce agreed. "Alright, I'll go this time too!"
A second search and rescue team was assembled. Meanwhile, on the mountain
Chapter 165 (appears out of order - should be before Chapter 168)
The two boys walked when a wild dog or wolf-like creature sprang from the path. Irvin trembled.
"Davian, what is that?"
Davian froze. "Don't move. It looks like a wild dog or wolf!"
"Davian, why are there wolves here?"
Davian tried to remain calm. "Don't run. Whether it's a wolf or dog, don't run!"
Irvin gulped. "Then what should we do?"
"I read that when you encounter wolves, don't panic! Raise your hands, make yourselves look strong!"
"Ah!"
They raised their arms, trying to appear imposing. The large dog wasn't intimidated.
"Let's slowly retreat to the highest point!"
"Okay!"
As they moved, the dog lunged at Irvin.
"Ah! Don't come near!"
The hungry dog attacked. The boys fled, but their short legs were no match for the dog. Just as the dog was about to reach Irvin, two gunshots rang out. The dog fled, and the boys tumbled down the mountain path.
An old man appeared.
"Children, don't be afraid!"
Dizzy and scraped, they looked up. "Who are you?"
"I'm the mountain ranger!"
"Oh!"
"Whose children are you? Why are you here?"
"We're lost!"
"Come with me!"
The one-eyed, crippled ranger carried the children to his residence. Seeing their hunger, he made them soup.
"Thank you, sir!" They devoured the soup.
A little girl asked, "Where did you come from?"
"Outside the mountain!"
"Outside the mountain?"
"Yes!"
"Thank you, little girl!"
"You're welcome!"
After eating, the children played together. The ranger, isolated and unaware of online news, didn't know their identities.
Meanwhile, Joanna and Bruce searched again.
"Davian, Irvin!"
"There's blood!"
"Thud!" Joanna found Davian's clothes.
"Davian must be on the mountain!"
"There's blood here too"
