Chapter 208

They insisted Joanna had seduced Bruce, and despite her attempts to clarify, they refused to believe her. Exasperated, she decided to admit it. Unrepentant and self-assured, she even retorted, causing Margaret to tremble with rage. "You shameless woman!" Margaret shrieked. "Bruce, slap her!"

Bruce scowled at Margaret's unreasonable demand. "Grandma!"

"Do it!" Margaret's lips quivered. Clutching her chest, she panted.

Bruce looked helplessly at Joanna, seeking her permission to appease his grandmother with a light slap. Joanna responded with a cold stare, refusing to yield.

"I told you not to talk back to Grandma!" Bruce said.

A dumbfounded Joanna retorted, "Bruce, I'm not the Everett family's punching bag, and I'm not obligated to obey your instructions!"

"Slap her and throw this shameless woman out!" Margaret urged. "We can't tolerate her in our house!"

"I don't care about your family," Joanna snapped. "If your grandson hadn't forced me here, I wouldn't have stepped foot in your house! Get lost!"

"Don't worry, I will," Joanna said.

Bruce's eyes darkened. "Joanna, can't you keep quiet?" he asked, then turning to Margaret, "Grandma, calm down! Don't get so angry." He added, "Joanna, I'll send you home now."

Joanna glared at them. "All of you, leave my room! Let me change my clothes!"

Margaret nearly exploded. "Someone! Throw this vixen out!"

Lilian and Emma tried to pull Joanna from the bed.

"What are you doing?" Joanna protested. "Margaret, you're unreasonable. We're ladies; there's no need for brute force! Do you think you can bully people because you're old?"

Margaret's face paled, and she began coughing violently.

"Grandma, Grandma!" cried Bruce.

Margaret, exasperated and breathless, fainted.

Bruce panicked. "Grandma! Quick, a doctor!"

The doctor and nurses applied an oxygen mask and administered an intracardiac injection. "Mrs. Everett is in critical condition. We need to get her to the hospital immediately."

Bruce sprang into action, pushing Margaret's wheelchair. "Prepare the car!"

Margaret was rushed to the emergency room. While she received treatment, Bruce and Roxanne waited anxiously.

Roxanne, outwardly compassionate, inwardly gloated. It was Joanna's fault, she thought; Margaret's agitation and subsequent collapse were Joanna's doing. If Margaret died, Bruce would never forgive Joanna. A sinister wish sprouted in Roxanne's heart: that the doctors would fail to save Margaret.

Four hours later, the operating room door opened.

Bruce rushed to the doctor. "How is Grandma?"

"Mr. Everett, Mrs. Everett was too agitated. A brain hemorrhage occurred, and her situation is critical."

"What should we do?" Bruce asked, distraught.

"The surgery is over; we've done all we can. Her waking up depends on her brain's ability to absorb the fluid." The doctor added, "Mr. Everett, be prepared."

"You must do your best!" Bruce pleaded.

"We will," the doctor replied, leaving.

Bruce walked the hospital corridor, lighting a cigarette. Margaret was his closest and most respected kin; Joanna was the woman he loved most. He didn't want to lose either.

Joanna returned home, physically and mentally exhausted, vowing never to endure such an ordeal again. As she reached her door, her phone rang—it was Michael.

"Miss Haynes!" he exclaimed. "Brother Trumpet called! They want to discuss the cooperation details and meet you in Greene Town!"

Joanna was overjoyed. "Great! Tomorrow!"

"Alright, I'll contact Brother Trumpet."

Despite her exhaustion, Joanna needed to address the factory's inventory.

Entering her apartment, Lilia greeted her. "Mommy, why is your face so red?"

"I have a fever," Joanna explained. "I won't kiss you."

"Mommy, did you go see Daddy?" Lilia asked.

Joanna was stunned. Lilia continued, "Didn't Daddy say I'd see my brothers soon?"

Joanna, unsure how to answer, rubbed Lilia's head. The court session was in three days. She hoped for a fair decision granting her custody.

"You'll see your brothers soon," she promised.

The next day, Joanna, along with Cora, Michael, and Nicholas, traveled to Greene City to address the inventory issue.
