Chapter 1015

The more Jenny thought about it, the more afraid she became. Rowan, focused on driving, sensed the shift in her emotions. He couldn't bring himself to suggest they go home together, as if something deep within him warned him against it. They rode in silence, exchanging no words until they arrived at her house.

Once there, Jenny's eyes were red. "Rowan," she asked, "do you not love me anymore? If you don't, I'll leave. I won't cling to you. But you can't treat me so coldly."

Rowan looked at her, a hint of helplessness in his gaze. He gently touched her head. "You're overthinking it," he said. "I've been very busy lately, and honestly, haven't thought about it much."

Jenny felt a slight relief, though tears still streamed down her face. "I understand," she said. "Go ahead and take care of your things. But Rowan, if there ever comes a day when you don't love me anymore, please tell me. Don't let me wait like a fool. I don't want to force love, and I don't want you to feel trapped."

Rowan, caught off guard, frowned and nodded. "Okay, I promise."

After lunch, Skylar went to the library. Finding metaphysical books in a public library was difficult, but she needed a quiet place to think. By late afternoon, she felt calm and ready to face Gloria. She drove to Pearlhall Residence, arriving just in time.

As Skylar entered, Gloria's eyes scanned her, concern evident. "How did you lose so much weight on vacation? The food didn't agree with you?"

Skylar chuckled. "I've been dieting. It seems to be working."

"Mrs. Martin, you've always had a perfect figure. No need to diet," Edgar interjected. He felt these young people chased unrealistic ideals of beauty; Skylar's figure surpassed most celebrities he saw on TV. Skylar was already slim, but now noticeably thinner; her clothes hung loosely.

Gloria noticed as well. "You really shouldn't diet like this. It's not good for your health."

Skylar smiled and nodded. "I'll listen to you, Grandma. No more dieting."

"That's more like it," Gloria sighed with relief. She couldn't bear the thought of Skylar suffering. "I've had the chef prepare all your favorite dishes. Eat plenty," she continued.

Skylar nodded. "Of course." However, she noticed Gloria's health had deteriorated while she and Joe were away. Her complexion wasn't as rosy. On the drive, Skylar spoke with Edgar, who mentioned Howard's daily visits to check on Gloria. Gloria should have been in the hospital, but disliked the sterile environment. Skylar was increasingly concerned.

"Where's Joe? Why isn't he here?" Gloria glanced at the door, her patience waning. Joe had many good qualities, but he was always too busy. He'd promised to come with Skylar, but he was late.

"It's probably traffic," Skylar reassured her, hoping to ease her frustration. "It was bad when I arrived."

"Are you hungry, Skye? We can eat without him," Gloria grumbled, her irritation evident.

Skylar shook her head. "No, Grandma."

"I'm starving. Let's not wait," Gloria huffed, standing quickly. She wobbled, unsteady from standing too fast. Edgar rushed to steady her. "Mrs. Martin Senior, please take it slow."

A flicker of worry crossed Skylar's face. She wondered how Gloria's health had deteriorated so rapidly.
