Chapter 1029

With Skylar and Joe added to the mix, the heavy atmosphere caused Skylar to take a deep breath. Just then, Joe's phone rang. He kept his eyes fixed on Skylar as he answered.

"Is there something urgent?" Joe asked, his voice icy. Skylar observed his sudden change in expression, unease filling her. Then she heard him say, "I'll head over right now."

After hanging up, he turned to her. "There's an urgent matter at the company I need to handle. We'll have to reschedule." Without waiting for her response, he left.

Skylar noticed they were near the front of the line. "We're almost up," she said hurriedly. "The divorce process is quick; it should only take a few minutes."

Joe's gaze was glacial as he glanced at his watch. "Even ten minutes is too long. Let's do this another day," he replied. He didn't give Skylar a chance to respond, striding away and exiting the courthouse.

Skylar was taken aback. They were already at the courthouse, and now Joe had unexpectedly left. Just as she was about to leave, someone behind her said, "I don't think your husband wants a divorce. He clearly still cares. Maybe he's just looking for an excuse to leave. You two probably won't split."

Skylar paused, then forced a smile, saying nothing. She walked out of the courthouse. Back in the car, she tossed her bag of documents onto the passenger seat, feeling lost and confused.

More than a week had passed, leaving less than a week remaining. "I'll wait until tonight to set a time with him," she thought. However, that evening, Joe's phone was off, and he hadn't replied to her messages. Paul's phone was also off. She wondered if they were on a business trip.

Skylar stared at her phone, feeling lost. Then, she received a call from Alexander.

"Skye, everything's arranged in Murida. You can go whenever you're ready. They promised ample opportunity to showcase your talents," he said.

"Thank you, Mr. Gardner Senior," she replied.

Only Alexander knew her situation. She had expected to handle everything alone, yet he was actively helping her with her career.

"Have you finalized the divorce with Joe yet?" he asked.

After a pause, Skylar answered, "He had an urgent matter today, so we haven't finalized it yet."

"Oh, what a coincidence! I wonder if Grandma Viola misjudged the situation. You and Joe seem very compatible."

"Since you two got together, I've noticed a significant change in him. And Gloria's been doing much better lately."

The more he spoke, the more Alexander sensed something was amiss. Yet, given Viola's involvement, he hesitated to question her judgment. Still, he couldn't bear to see Skylar and Joe separate. They had both faced significant struggles.

When Skylar heard "misjudged," something flickered in her mind.

"Oh, I'm getting old and rambling. Just take care of yourself and don't overthink things. There's still time. You don't need to rush the divorce." Alexander regretted speaking so freely. The more he said, the more Skylar might feel hurt.

After their call ended, Skylar immediately retrieved Viola's two letters.
