Chapter 1040
Skylar contemplated their impending divorce. If he found out, so be it. She planned to confess.
โIโฆโ
Just as she began to speak, the doorbell rang frantically. Joeโs eyes hardened. โWhoโs the idiot who canโt read the room?โ he muttered.
โIโll see who it is,โ Skylar replied, sighing in relief as she went downstairs.
She used the surveillance camera to identify the visitor. Seeing Vera, she frowned and opened the door. Veraโs disappointment was evident; she clearly expected someone else. The late-night visit demanded a compelling reason.
โWhat do you want?โ Skylar asked directly.
โI need to see Joe,โ Vera replied. โWhat I have to say is for his ears only. The lateness of the hour speaks to the urgency of this matter. Is he home? Take me to him.โ
Skylar immediately called Joe. He answered promptly. โWho is it?โ
โItโs Ms. Ruell. She says itโs extremely important she speak with you.โ
Joe was silent for a moment. Veraโs nervousness was palpable, and Skylar found it puzzling. Shouldnโt Vera be confident Joe would see her, given their tumultuous history?
โBring her in,โ Joe finally said.
Skylar smirked, realizing sheโd overthought the situation. Perhaps Joe was eager to see Vera. She was relieved she hadnโt impulsively revealed her feelings. If she had, Joe would have undoubtedly teased her relentlessly. She mentally noted this feeling, then turned to Vera. โDo come in.โ
Vera visibly relaxed. They found Joe already downstairs, seated on the couch. Skylar glanced at him before heading upstairs.
As she started up the stairs, Joe called, โWait.โ
Vera immediately addressed Joe. โJoe, what Iโm about to say is confidential.โ She loathed Skylar, but thankfully, Skylar knew better than to intrude. She started upstairs, but Joe stopped her. Vera found Joe inscrutable.
โAnything else?โ Skylar asked Joe. Couldnโt he see Vera hoping sheโd disappear, leaving them alone?
โSkylar is my wife,โ Joe told Vera. โSheโs not a stranger; sheโs privy to everything.โ
