Skylar contemplated their impending divorce. If he found out, so be it. She planned to confess.

Just as she began to speak, the doorbell rang frantically. Joe’s eyes hardened. “Who’s the idiot who can’t read the room?” he muttered.

“I’ll see who it is,” Skylar replied, sighing in relief as she went downstairs.

She used the surveillance camera to identify the visitor. Seeing Vera, she frowned and opened the door. Vera’s disappointment was evident; she clearly expected someone else. The late-night visit demanded a compelling reason.

“What do you want?” Skylar asked directly.

“I need to see Joe,” Vera replied. “What I have to say is for his ears only. The lateness of the hour speaks to the urgency of this matter. Is he home? Take me to him.”

Skylar immediately called Joe. He answered promptly. “Who is it?”

“It’s Ms. Ruell. She says it’s extremely important she speak with you.”

Joe was silent for a moment. Vera’s nervousness was palpable, and Skylar found it puzzling. Shouldn’t Vera be confident Joe would see her, given their tumultuous history?

“Bring her in,” Joe finally said.

Skylar smirked, realizing she’d overthought the situation. Perhaps Joe was eager to see Vera. She was relieved she hadn’t impulsively revealed her feelings. If she had, Joe would have undoubtedly teased her relentlessly. She mentally noted this feeling, then turned to Vera. “Do come in.”

Vera visibly relaxed. They found Joe already downstairs, seated on the couch. Skylar glanced at him before heading upstairs.

As she started up the stairs, Joe called, “Wait.”

Vera immediately addressed Joe. “Joe, what I’m about to say is confidential.” She loathed Skylar, but thankfully, Skylar knew better than to intrude. She started upstairs, but Joe stopped her. Vera found Joe inscrutable.

“Anything else?” Skylar asked Joe. Couldn’t he see Vera hoping she’d disappear, leaving them alone?

“Skylar is my wife,” Joe told Vera. “She’s not a stranger; she’s privy to everything.”
