Chapter 1126
Skylar glanced at Steven, who was driving. Seeing she was on a call, Charles, Janine, and Harvey fell silent.
“Yeah, I’m free,” she replied.
Lizzie’s voice dropped, clearly trying to avoid being overheard. Fortunately, Skylar heard her clearly. “They put Joe and me in the same room. And… Joe’s had too much to drink,” Lizzie said, nudging Joe. She found it unusual; Joe rarely got drunk.
“Too much to drink?” Skylar was surprised. Joe had texted her only ten minutes prior.
“I thought so too. I even wondered if he was faking, but I've nudged him several times, and he's barely reacting,” Lizzie explained.
Skylar's expression darkened. “You two shouldn't stay at Avalon Residence. I'm worried about trouble. Is Paul around?”
“Paul’s still downstairs, socializing.”
“I’ll call him. Lizzie, please don't leave the room. Stay with Joe.”
“Got it. Don't worry, I didn't drink. I'll keep an eye on him.”
Skylar called Paul repeatedly, but he didn't answer. Unease grew.
Steven noticed her troubled expression. “Skye, is something wrong?”
Janine, Charles, and Harvey also looked at her with concern. Skylar shook her head. “It’s nothing. Just drop me off here. You guys go home.”
“Are you sure?” Steven asked, pulling over, his tone serious.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Go home. I’ll have dinner with Joe.” Skylar reassured them, though unsure what was happening. Perhaps she was overreacting.
Steven nodded. Janine rolled down her window. “If anything comes up, let us know. It’s better to face things together.”
“Yes, Skylar, if anyone’s messing with you, tell me,” Harvey said, rolling up his sleeves.
Skylar felt warmth and amusement. “Alright, if anyone dares, I’ll bring you to help me fight.”
“Count me in,” Charles chimed in.
Skylar laughed. “I’ll call on all of you.” She glanced at the traffic light. “You all better get going now, before rush hour.”
“Be careful,” Steven said.
“I’ll take the subway,” Skylar said, pointing to the nearby station.
After Steven left, she immediately called Lizzie. Worry gnawed at her. “Lizzie, I’ve been trying to reach Paul, but he’s not answering. Whatever you do, don't open the door for anyone.”
Lizzie agreed. “Something feels off. It feels like someone drugged him. He’s sleeping too deeply. We’ve been so careful, but… I just asked a doctor friend. We should take him to the hospital, but there are too many people here, and I can’t get him out alone.”
Skylar's heart sank. She quickly thought of someone who could help. “Try calling Paul again. I’ve just thought of someone who might be able to help.” Skylar thought of Rowan.
