Natalie's decision wasn't simply about her willingness to leave; she couldn't jeopardize Austin's relationship with his mother. As a low-level employee, causing discord between them wasn't worth the trouble.

“So, you resigned?” Skylar noted Natalie's subdued demeanor.

Natalie nodded. “I submitted my resignation this morning.” She'd left after speaking with Hank, as Austin wasn't present. Austin's mother's insistence on an immediate departure prompted Natalie to leave hastily, even forgoing her final month's pay. Leaving so abruptly was ill-advised; she could have at least waited for a replacement.

Skylar picked up a beer. “Alright, I’ll drink to that—”

“You better not. Didn’t you drive?” Natalie intercepted the bottle.

Skylar grabbed a chicken wing instead. “Any plans for the future?”

Natalie shook her head. “No idea yet. I’ll think about it tomorrow.”

The doorbell rang. Natalie looked at Skylar. “I didn’t invite anyone.” She’d intended a private conversation, but rose to answer the door.

“Who is it?” she asked, her breath slightly alcoholic.

Seeing the visitor sobered her instantly. “You… do you need something?”

Skylar followed Natalie. The opened door revealed Jeremy, surprising them both.

“Have you been drinking?” Jeremy asked, his question confirming his observation of Natalie's flushed cheeks, dreamy gaze, and the scent of alcohol.

“Yeah, a little,” Natalie admitted.

Jeremy frowned. “Why are you drinking?”

“No reason. Just felt like it. Do you need something? If not, I’ll get back to drinking and chatting with Skylar.” Natalie's patience was wearing thin.

It had always been this way. Jeremy's frown, since her youth, signified his disapproval. During their marriage, she'd patiently listened, but now? They were divorced; what right did he have?

Jeremy finally noticed Skylar and nodded. “Alright, I won’t disturb you. Carry on.” He offered no explanation for his visit before leaving.

Natalie's intoxicated state delayed her comprehension. She quickly closed the door, then turned to Skylar. “Jeremy hasn’t contacted me in ages. I had no idea why he came. But whatever, he didn't say anything anyway.”
