Chapter 122

Skylar arrived for her first day on Alexander's team. As soon as she entered the building, Alexander's assistant, Oliver, guided her through the onboarding process. It wasn't complicated, so it didn't take long. Afterward, Oliver brought her to meet Alexander.

Alexander was intently focused on cleaning a bronze artifact. He didn't realize they were entering the room. Oliver gestured for Skylar to remain silent. Skylar understood that handling antiques required complete concentration to prevent mistakes. She was surprised to find someone of Alexander's age and status still working on the antiques himself.

She glanced at the bronze artifact's inscriptions. It seemed to be from the early Augustan period, with inscriptions in classical Glorian. Skylar was captivated. She could see the artifact's journey, from its creation to its burial with its owner, and its recent discovery. She knew Alexander's team was working with the country's archaeologists.

Oliver watched Alexander with admiration. In this industry, Alexander was a legend. Many people envied Oliver for being the legend's assistant. He had learned a lot working with Alexander.

Alexander raised his head, seeing Oliver and Skylar standing there. He dropped his tools, walked over with a cheerful smile, and asked, "Can you tell me when the artifact was made?"

"During the Augustan period," Skylar replied.

Alexander's eyes lit up. Impressed by Skylar's knowledge, he said, "You're right, Skye. Can you tell me who your mentor is?"

"I don't have a mentor. I learned from an elderly lady at home. She had much to teach," Skylar replied, privately remembering that Viola hadn't taken her on as an apprentice, only caring for her like a granddaughter.

Alexander didn't press further. "I'm not sure what you're capable of yet, so I can't assign you to a specific job. I have a painting my team is reluctant to work on. Would you like to take a look and see if you can restore it?"

Oliver's eyes widened. What was going on? Why was Alexander giving Skylar one of the most challenging projects? She was new to the team, inexperienced, and yet given a difficult task. He hoped Alexander wouldn't scare her away with his unusual approach. They finally had a beautiful new team member!

"Sure, I'll give it a try," Skylar replied without hesitation.

Oliver was stunned. Although he hadn't been present during Skylar's interview, his colleagues had mentioned her incredible skill—even more so than those who had been with Alexander's team for years. When he first saw Skylar, he'd been so captivated by her beauty that he'd forgotten his colleagues' comments. They'd warned him not to judge a book by its cover, but he had.

Alexander was pleased. He knew Caleb had done something right; he had good taste in women. He was already picturing Skylar as his granddaughter-in-law. It wouldn't matter if she couldn't fully restore the painting; she would have ample opportunities to work with various ancient artifacts on his team. He believed she would be an expert in a few years.

During lunchtime, Skylar headed to the hospital.
