Chapter 1258

Skylar gripped her phone tightly. Her ears registered nothing.

“We can wait for Mr. Ziegler to return. Once he's recovered, he might remember more,” Jeremy said, sensing Skylar's silence and the depth of her distress. It mirrored the shock she'd felt three years prior, upon learning of Joe and Paul's disappearance.

Skylar softly replied, “Okay, I understand. Please send me Mr. Ziegler's flight details. I'll pick him up.”

Shortly after the call ended, Jeremy sent the information. Numbly, Skylar canceled her own flight. For a long time, she remained lost in a daze.

“Skye?”

“Skye?”

Janine found Skylar pale and vacant, the picture of someone who'd received terrible news. Deep concern washed over her. After repeated calls, Skylar finally looked up, her eyes meeting Janine's worried gaze. “Mom.”

“What were you thinking about? Is something wrong? Are you unwell?” Janine asked rapidly. Skylar was the person she cared for most, having spent years searching for Joe in a foreign land. Everyone knew, yet they'd avoided crushing her hopes. Now, seeing Skylar's despair, Janine felt a pang of worry.

Skylar forced a smile. “It’s nothing. I’m just tired from a bad night’s sleep. I’ll be fine after resting. You all carry on.”

She stood, grabbed her bag and phone, and walked past Janine.

As Skylar left, Janine murmured, “Something’s bothering her. Skye always keeps her troubles to herself, not wanting me to worry. I know her well enough to tell something's amiss. Sigh!”

Chapter 58

Skylar left Sullance Group and went straight to Galaxy Villa. She’d barely settled with a glass of water when her phone rang again. She frowned at the incoming call from Vera.

She lacked the energy to talk. After ignoring the initial call, Vera persisted with several more. Finally, Skylar answered.

“Skylar, it’s Vera. I know you might not want to talk, but I don’t know who else to call,” Vera said frantically.

Skylar’s patience was wearing thin. “Just tell me what’s happening.”

“It’s my dad. He’s having an affair and wants a divorce. My mom is devastated. I took her to a therapist today; she’s better now. But my dad… He and Mom always seemed so loving. They rarely argued! I can’t believe he’d leave her for another woman.”

“Do you think a negative item is involved?” Vera’s voice was uncertain.

Skylar recognized Vera’s suspicion was largely conjecture. After a few more questions, Skylar concluded, “We can’t confirm a negative item, but your father’s been seeing someone for a while. It doesn't seem related to a negative item.”
